why do they do it???

dogs that is....they clearly know that vets 'normal' working hours are Mon-Sat 9-5ish, and yet they invariably wait til after 5pm or, even better in this case, til Saturday evening before seriously injuring themselves....grrrr

Im currently still up (too much coca-cola) nursing Murphy as I think he has broken his foot - or at least a toe or two. Had him out for a late arvo 2hr walk & he started limping early doors. checked his foot over, couldnt see a thing. Assumed he was milking it for all its worth & continued on, checking his foot from time to time.

Got home after 6. He slept for a while & then came seriously hobbling through to the kitchen for his tea. Thought his foot looked a little swollen so gave him some arnica tablets. By 9pm his foot had doubled in size. Sods law I ran out of Metacam last month (I ALWAYS have a supply in the house for those 'just in case' moments...DOH).

Gave him more arnica b4 bed time & have put a supportive bandage on...hope to god its gone down by the morning.....I dont get paid til nxt week - so he'll have to hobble til monday regardless - why oh why - does he not know how much the E-vets cost??? !!! Heres hoping its just muscular as I never actually heard him scream when out on the walk, which he would have surely done if he had broken something (this is the dog that screams as if you have chopped off his leg with a blunt knife if he gets a papercut....)

Poor you. Fingers crossed it is just a sprain. Blue screemed when he broke his toe and is quite brave normally. It also didn't swell very much.

Give him a hug from me. Let us know how he gets on

 Poor Murphy, and you Suzanne know what you mean about the E-vets!. Hope he is OK till you get him to the vets on Monday and there is no broken bones, more likely though by the sound of it to be an infection which can be as bad. Let us know how he gets on. Nora

Poor Murphy!! I know exactly how you feel I have Kirk who I think is possibly one of the most accident prone hounds going!!! He's broken his toes 3 times and screamed the place down when it happened so hopefully it is just a muscular injury.


I know what you mean about picking there moments and out of hour prices they are sooooooo expensive, Kirk tends to "choose" out of hours to injure himself, and we've met a few vets dotted over the country as holiday time is a favourite of his!!!!!!!!

It sounds to me like he's sprained his foot, or pulled a muscle. Vegas sometimes does this when we're out and a few days gentle walks on the lead cures it. But hobbling around, he always makes it look ten times worse than it actually is. LOL - Murph sounds as if he does the same! Poor lad - hope he's better soon. Hope you don't need to go to the e-vets as they are very costly! Let us know how he's getting on.

Sorry to hear Murphy's poorly. All our lot seem to prefer the emergency vet as they rarely ever have an acute injury in normal working hours.

He hasn't maybe stood on a bee has he? It's just Indy did that once and the swelling was spectacular and lots of bees seem to be on the ground just now. I imagine if he did something dramatic enough to break toes I imagine he would have let you know about it at the time! (not that I am saying Murphy is a big woos or anything.......)

Hope he is better soon.

Sorry to hear Murphy has a poorly foot.  Am sure if he had actually broken anything you would have definately heard about it at the time - greyhounds aren't known for being quiet when they hurt themselves are they?!!!!!  Hope that the swelling has gone down and Murphy's back to his usual self soon.


Tilly sends him her love too.


(PS hope the vets bill isn't too large - you'll have to have words with Murphy and tell him that he's only allowed to hurt himself or be ill monday to friday 9-5 in the future!)

thanks for all your healing thoughts guys....well - the wee beggar was brand new this morning. I called the E-vets last night as I was close to contemplating self medicating him with paracetamol he was in so much pain. Thankfully they talked me out of it & mentioned poss bee-sting too as theyve had loads of dogs coming in with that recently. I kinda poo-pood the idea as the swelling didnt occur til at least 3 hrs post 1st limp. However I gave him a 1/2 piriton tablet last night "just in case".

Seemed to do the trick as I took the bandage off this morning & all swelling was away & not a limp in sight....wee swine!! If it was muscular Im sure he would still be limping....thank GOD I didnt go to E-vets (90 quid cost before they even LOOK at the animal! grrrr) - that would have been one costly bee....1/2 tablet of piriton - approx 20 pence....better go stock up on some more as there are hunners of bees about at the mo.

Phew is all I can say....never did find the stinger tho...Murf was given the all clear to come to the beach today to celebrate not having to amputate his leg (- the way he was acting last night you'd have thought it was the obvious next step...) - as soon as his tootsies hit the sand, sun on his back, he never stopped running for 3hrs. God give me strength...

Glad you didn't have to amputate Murphy's leg after all - aren't men so pathetic?!!!!  Seriously glad that he's feeling better and enjoyed his celebratory run on the beach.  Bet he nacared now and sound asleep on his bed like nothing happened?!!  Hope you've stocked up on the piriton!!


Hopefully see you, murphy and maisie on Sunday at Holyrood.

indeed Debbie!! I get some strange looks of folk sometimes as every time Murph comes hobbling over to me I tell him "oh dear Murf, we'll just have to amputate..."

I do worry about my sanity sometimes....

I hope to make it along on Sunday - missed the last one due to selfish little sister collapsing during the 1/2 marathon & getting whisked off in an ambulance. Then had to wait around A&E....honestly, did she not realise I had things to do.... (shes fine now honest - chronic dehydration at the 11 mile mark - she threw up all over the nice policeman who caught her as she careered off course wildly...thats what you get for being daft enough to go running!!

oh yeah - Tree - if you look up the word 'Woose' in the dictionary, youll see Murphys picture next to it! He invented it, he even gave it a capital W !!!

Suzanne, Delighted that Murphy is fine now.


NOTE Self medicating with human medicines though does concern me, I did find this info on the web .Human Drugs and Pets! and as I would advise anybody that asks me is always ask your vet before administering your pet with any type of drug.

*edited to say* - just to point out - Siouxsie is right in that you should never self medicate your pet. My wording in my original thread was quite misleading.... - Im at an advantage as Im at the end of my 2nd year training to be a Vet nurse so know a fair bit about the subject...ALWAYS consult your vet b4 doing anything - there is also a good thread in the Health section called "Poisoning potential" that lists - you guessed it, things that poison your pets - included are some human medicines such as ibuprofen (fatal to animals), paracetamol (fatal to cats) etc

Self medicating your pet is one of the leading causes of death from poisoning to pets in the UK. Leave it to the experts....

ps - my vets confirmed I could give Murf piriton before anyone asks....

Hi Joyce

That's Rebel. He's our 4 year old 'lurcher'. GAL took him when he was about 18 months even though he wasn't an obvious lurcher because he was miserable at his last home.

The corgi bit made me laugh! The picture is misleading as he's in mid jump but he's actually fairly big and probably a GSD cross. He's very strong, has huge teeth but a fairly soft mouth and is like a bull in a china shop. Why go around something when straight through it will do?

He does a good sideline in attacking strangers on the property too (including unsuspecting workmen). The dog most likely to get himself and others in trouble...!
