I have a friend whose elderly dog has been diabetic for some time now. She has been losing weight and unfortunately Jade has now started to pee her bed or the floor. She is also retching and bringing up watery fluid. When Alison took Jade to the vet, he told her to increase Jade's food to help her gain weight and said she had ketones in her urine. Alison felt that the vet wasn't all that helpful, particularly when she was seeking advice on how to help Jade's peeing and retching problem.
I told her it would be best for her to seek a second opinion from another vet. But I wondered if anyone on the forum had experience of this and what they did to help their dog(s). Alison doesn't have a computer and Jade is a collie X.
hmm, tricky one. I think Alison needs more information...... so Jade has ketones in her urine - what exactly does that mean and what are the implications.? It sounds as tho the diabetes may be getting worse but I am only guessing. I'd agree with you Christine, she needs a second opinion and certainly more information.
Ketones are present in the urine if the body is breaking down body fat for energy if you are not eating enough or is a sign of poorly controlled diabeties as the body is not processing sugar properly. Vomiting is also a sign of high blood sugar. (I presume it is the same for dogs as humans)
It sounds as though your dog's diabeties is not under control and if I were her would definatly get a second opinion. Sounds asthough medication may need changing.
Thanks for your advice, Amanda and Tree! I'll pass your messages on to Alison. Hopefully she's seen another vet to get better advice on controlling Jade's diabetes.
