We have read in a number of greyhound books that greys are well known for not moulting (much). However, over the last couple of weeks we have noticed that Tilly has been moulting loads!


We have now had her about 3 months and are wondering whether it is just a seasonal thing combined with her losing her kennel coat. The fur that is coming out is all soft and "dead" and her coat still looks healthy and shiny (we have also noticed that the fur on her back is going a little coarser - more like a proper greyhound coat). Tilly seems far from stressed about everything and she is bright and healthy and eating well. On Carol's recommendation we bought a shedding blade (think that's what it's called - kind of a metal hoop thing) which is working wonders at pulling out loads and loads of dead hair - anyone would think we hadn't groomed her for months.


My point is that we think everything is ok but could just do with a little bit of reassurance from the experienced grey owners amongst you.


Not that the owners have to necessarily be grey. Sorry, badly worded. Owners of greys!

poor Tilly!  i haven't noticed that dave and daisy moult on a seasonal basis - it seems to be ongoing !  having said that, they don't seem to shed too much hair but it is fairly constant. 


perhaps it's another one of those individual things - each dog's shedding is different !

Last few weeks, Millie has ben moulting really badly. I think its just the warmer weather coming thats making her shed! I gave her a bath the other day and gave her a good scrub and that seems to have helped with the dandruff and loose fur, as well as me brushing her on a daily basis. It seems to be settling down after i bathed her

Both Harry and Pearly are shedding hair too. It's more noticeable with Harry because he's so much darker. he gets quite dandruffy as well. The good news is that I've noticed that in the past couple of months that his coat is extra shiny and it's much softer than it used to be. Maybe it's taken all this time for his coat to completely renew itself from his olden days of yukkiness.

Tilly's sounds like she's absolutely fine and dandy - if she's healthy and energetic in every other way then you don't need to worry. Just enjoy all that grooming together!

Cas is shedding too and has a bit of dandruff, nothing to worry about wait till Tilly goes bald at the bum then you can worry. Only joking the moulting is quite normal some dogs more than others and some greys as in Cassies case go a bit sparse from the rear end , it will grow back. As long as you groom regular and a little sardines in the food every now and again for a shiny coat, no problems. Nora Hope this helps.

Harry and Pearly get mackerel fillets in tomato sauce every so often. They absolutely love them, but they can only have them once a fortnight at the moment cos tomatoes contain a substance that can aggravate arthritic conditions.

I often have them on toast for my tea. Tomatoey mackerel fillets, that is, not Harry and Pearly.....

BD (ie, before dogs!) I used to marvel at why one of my very good friends was always covered in cat hair, and why her car was always so full of it. I mean, doesn't she have a dustpan and brush or a clothes brush? Now I know different and I feel great shame at my previous misplaced righteousness........

My dogs actually prefer the sardines in tomato sauce as opposed to the ones in oil. Personal preference i think

We give Tilly the sardines in tomato sauce (which she loves!) in the hope that it will stop her wee burning massive brown rings on our grass.  To be honest she's eat anything though!!

I have only every used Tomato Juice and not sauce to stop the urine marks on the grass. Be interesting to see if sauce makes the difference

Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C and potassium so the sauce will also have some. Vegas loves pilchards in tomato sauce (so do I on toast) and it's good for just about everything as far as I can see! Yum Yum!

Ziggy was moulting really badly over the past few weeks. There have been tumble weeds of hair floating on the floors!

I've been on holiday in Galway and Ziggy and Vernon were in kennels. On their return they had both been given a nice bath and Ziggy was sooo shiny and all the dead hair gone. They must have given him a good scrubbin to get all the hair out but whatever they did he looks great!
Might be an idea to get a grooming session for bad moulting as it really worked for Ziggy.
