Animal Health and Welfare Bill

Can anyone from Gal help me with this? I've been keeping an eye on the Animal health and Welfare Bill at the Scottish Parliament and am saddened to se that greyhounds will only be mentioned in secondary legislation which is not going to happen soon. I've been bombarding MSP's, the SSPCA and the like asking why they are not a priority. My main copncern is about flapping tracks which I know you are all too aware of as it is you who pick up the pieces. I was so heartened to see that you all wrote last year to your MSPs. I cant understand why it is allowed to go on. Anyway, it came to my attention that there is no-one specifically  representing the interests of greyhounds on any of the committees so I've been asking why? I've had several responses so far but as I'm only 1 person I really need your help. There is a committee called the Cross Party Group on Animal Welfare which advises the parliament on making laws. It is made up of MSP's and reps from various animal organisations. They have told me that if anyone from greyhound charities wishes to get involved they can call- SYLVIA JACKSON, CONVENOR, ON 0131 348 5742. Is there anyone from GAL who could do this? I live in the North so would find it difficult. Also I am not a GAL committee menber or anything. As I said I'm just one greyhound owner. Thank you.

Hi Fiona, GAL have had some involvement in the new bill, we were sent a copy last year as part of the consultancy for the initial draft. At the time we'd found out that the equivalent bill in England had been amended to exclude Greyhounds so we wrote to the powers at be and were happy to receive cofirmation that Geyhounds were fully part of the bill. Guess I felt this was a wee bit of a victory for Scottish Greyhounds. There's a conference being held in Edinburgh at the end of June on the implementation of the new bill and I'll be going along for a nosey and of course to represent GAL.

I know there's 'part 2' of the bill currently in progress, are you hoping that Greyhound Racing and the care of the retired hounds are made part of this legislation? Would be interested in your thoughts. There's many parties who would have vested interests in this including the NGRC and the RGT (although obviously not where the flappers are concerned)...

cheers

Dave

Well, I'm certainly hoping that Greyhound Racing and the care of both the hounds who are still "working" and the retired ones are taken care of. I thought there was "some" legislation in place? Although I'm sure it needs radically updated and stricter measures taken to enforce it by law!

Hazel.

Just to clarify this point, under the Scottish Animal Welfare bill Greyhounds in Scotland are treated just like any other breed of dog whereas in England they are specifically excluded from any of the legislation in their equivelant bill.
