Does anyone have any hints or tips on how to get my new grey to stop pulling on the lead?

Neo walks like a dream but Kito likes to pull ahead...you wouldn't think he was the older one with all his energy!

Would a harness help? or should i just accept that this is how he is? He is 8 now and obviously a bit set in his ways....

You could try a halti (works wonders with my mongrel)

The Halti worked for Cas too , she stopped pulling in no time and yet it is gentle on her as it gives you control of their head and they cannot just head off in the direction they want. Nora

A harness might help but in some dogs the problem is just the same, or worse. Some dogs just can't help pulling against the pressure of a lead or harness. But a harness might at least make the dog more controllable.

A Halti or Gentle Leader should stop the pulling (whilst the dog is wearing it). The pressure is transferred to the dog's muzzle and back of the neck so that when the dog pulls forward his head is guided down not forwards.

There are probably lots of ways to train this but one way is to simply stop walking as soon as the lead tightens so that the dog learns he won't get to where he wants to go while he's pulling like a train. Course, getting anywhere is going to take a while...

Thanks, kito seemed much better today, might give it a bit longer before trying the halti.

I think he feels more settled with neo and is slowing down to his pace so maybe its just a settling in thing, either that or i exhausted the poor mite at the park.

Harry used to pull on the lead like a locomotive. It took him a few weeks to settle down and now he walks beautifully. I don't know how long you've had Kito but it might be that he's just excited by his new environment and will gradually begin to walk nicely just like Neo.

I've only had kito since Tuesday and it looks like the same thing as happened with harry, just getting used to his new enviroment with all the new walks and smells. He is a thouseand times better today so I'm sure he is going to be just fine on the lead. He has really toned up my arm muscles though!

One technique that trainers recommend is to take the dog out and everytime it pullls keep changing direction so that the dog has no option to follow you and stick close to your legs. Never tried it myself but others recommend it. You may walk in circles for a while though!

The other one was to stop when he pulls and then wait until he comes back to you or halts and then start walking. Not sure about that technique though...could take a long time to work?
