Greyhound v Whippet: Cornering Abilities
Permalink Closed

Ever wondered which corners better, a Greyhound or a Whippet?

Well, Sandy & Sherry very kindly gave me a demonstration last weekend. We were heading up a track that left the main forest track at right angles.  They took off up the track for a nice game of chase, disappeared round the corner, then Sherry (Whippet) came haring back down with Sandy (Greyhound) in hot pursuit.  She got to the bottom of the track, zoomed round to the left & carried on up the main track.  Sandy got to the bottom of the track, then carried straight on, legs flapping wildly in a futile attempt at an emergency stop, then disappeared throught the long grass and landed with an almightly splash in the burn.  He climbed out the other side and stood there looking rather bemused.

I'm convinced Sherry was smirking, personally I think it was her revenge for him sideswiping her at full gallop a few weeks before and knocking her into a ditch full of stagnant water.....

Yes Millie has great difficulty in putting on the breaks sometimes. I always think she's gonna run into me at full speed but usually manages to avoid me just at the last minute. Very clumsy though lol

I'm still working on Neo's recall so off the lead runs are rare just now but i've lost count the amount of times he has come haring full pelt down the stairs when he hears his lead being lifted and careered head first into the wall at the bottom.

Emergency stops are really not a grey's thing...but bumped heads definately are.

I'm afraid my grey Angus did himself a mischief trying to turn with the same ability as my lurcher, Jenna. They were chasing each other on the beach and Jenna did a quick turn, Angus tried to follow and ended up with a non displaced spiral fracture in his back leg. Hasn't put him off much though and he still has the turning circle of a bus!!

Chad runs in at full speed from the bottom of the garden, but has learned that if he doesn't hit the breaks on time he goes for a slide on the doormats across the slippery floor! Tiger is much too sensible to slide in like his younger pal!

They do make you laugh (does any one else get the claws dug into your feet when they try to apply the brakes?) it sure hurts! Em x

I see it time and time again with Cas and Sasha, Sasha could turn on a penny  but Cas is all legs and no breaks. It is hysterical sometimes watching Sasha run rings round Cas and Cas getting more and more wound up trying to catch her. LOL Nora

I believe that whippet have swivel hips which enables them twist an turn much quicker.

Yes we get the claws in the feet ouch!!

Blue loves to run with collies but they are far to good at the corners. Blue either ends up barking as he tries to corner with little success or grass stains on his bum as he goes flying. Makes me laugh every time but he has got his own back by sending me flying when he didn't manage to stop.

Defo seen some really tight turning from Biscuit boy! His turn of speed is what makes him so brave around dogs so much bigger and heavier than him.  He loves the long chases but when he is tired or the other dog is tired, he will start doing circles around them and then quick reverse!  I've watched dogs get really bad tempered with him because he can just annoy them with his antics.

Maybe there's a gap in the market there - greyhound crash helmets!

Hi Jackie - great to hear that Sandy and Sherry are having such a good time together.  Sounds like Sherry is thoroughly settled in.

She certainly has, Madam is now well & truly in charge while Sandy just does what he is told!  Girl power rules!
