Jumping into the car boot?
Permalink Closed

Hi, i was really pleased the way I managed to train Rosie to wait, but another thing is rather annoying! She wont jump into the car boot! There are only two ways to get her in, lifting her or throwing a bit of food in and then she's more than happy to hop in! Is there anyway to train her to jump in, or do we just stick to the food?

Thanks

If you give her the command as you throw it in, she'll come to associate the word with jumping in and getting the reward, then you just sort of wean her off the reward, only giving it occasionally.  Or, more than likely, she'll come to realise that the car means going good places and she'll just do it anyway.  Sandy now loves cars so much that if he sees an open door or boot (no matter whose car it is) he'll try to get in!

Hi Laura, Jackie is right, stick with throwing a bit of food in but as she's about to jump in add a comand like 'in' or 'get in'. Keep doing that for a few days then try just the command without throwing the treat first, she's a clever girl so should have sussed the command and jump in, at this stage you then give her the treat and plenty of praise. You canleave it at that is she's fine but eventually you could get to the command then just lots of praise (but I'm sure she'd apreciate a treat every now and then!)..

My Petra is the same - she's not into jumping (has trouble even getting on the couch!). The problem I found with the food is that I never phased it out - she won't jump in unless she knows the treat is coming. she knows the command (up), and I ask her to jump before showing or giving the food treat, but if I try to phase it out by giving the treat every other time, she gets wise and then won't jump in!! But it's just easier to keep giving her the food I found...

We've got the opposite problem with Harry - his trainers must have taken him everywhere in the car and as a result he waits by the boot all the time and can't wait to get in! Problem is that he'll jump into any car given the chance. He comes out easy though too. He jumps in and lies down automatically - usually.
