Figured I'd post about GAL's dental activities this week........it's not all about rehoming dogs, some times we just need to get the hounds in a fit state to be homed first.
We took TOMMY into a foster home this week, he's 9 in December this year. He was rehomed by another organisation 2 years ago. He apparently suffered from a small case of separation anxiety and we were asked to rehome him. On arrival at his foster home the first obviously bad thing was the smell from his mouth, 'not nice' was probably an understatement. Well Tommy paid the vet a visit and we discovered the poor boy was in a bit of a state, in addition to a Grade 3 Heart murmur his teeth were rotten. Tommy had his dental during the week and the vet removed all but 3 teeth, a top incisor was left because the root was too deep and the bottom 2 incisors were left due to concerns for Tommy's jaw breaking. So thats Tommy, the poor boy, will try to get some pictures of him for you soon. He's settled in well into the foster home and 24 hours after his op is a 'changed dog', no wonder, the pain he must have been in would have been horrific, imagine toothache, now imagine toothache in ALL of your teeth...
And now Crosby, cut a long story short we were asked to rehome Crosby a few days ago, a volunteer went to visit him tonight to get some pictures and an assessment, because of his condition Crosby came home with her, Crosby was 8 in April of this year. Now here's some piccies of Crosby's teeth....guess where he's going next week..
So thats our 2 latest arrivals, couple of older gents now looking for homes once they've both fully recovered from their ops. Tommy is 100% catsafe and Crosby passed a brief cat test tonight but will be tested again in a few days so I guess there is a wee bit of hope for them! They both seem great with other dogs and kids too...
My aged cat had all but one of her molars removed some years back (despite careful feeding on hard food etc), and I thought that I might have to feed her on soft food - but not a bit of it: once she was recovered she was troughing in to her hard food same as ever!
Those pics are disturbing. I thought it was bad enough Dan having to get 5 teeth out but those poor dogs...Dan wasn't eating much and was losing weight prior to getting his teeth out, he's doing so much better now and eats all his food so we figure it must have been his bad teeth causing pain. It's amazing how quickly they seem to recover from dental work. Hope you find homes for these two guys soon.
Greys really do seem to suffer with their teeth don't they. The pictures were shocking and the pain must be unbearable. Lets hope they get a forever home soon!
The agony these poor boys must have been in is awful and with nothing done it would only have gotten worse. At least they are getting it sorted now but not before time.
Can we have pics soon, it would be nice to see the body that goes with the gnashers!!

Here's Crosby, he went to the vet this morning and got that horrible loose tooth pulled out, he's too underweight to be given an anesthetic to get the rest treated so for now he's on 3 dinners a day. He's also got an old injury to his front left leg so he's limpping a wee bit so he's on gentle walks for now. Foster mum says ''He's going to make someone a very easy pet, he's so biddable and really gentle with it''
OUCH ! I cannot even imagine how much discomfort they both must have been in , I am bad enough with just gum ache. Glad to hear that the problem is sorted for one and soon for the other. Nora
It just shows you how important teeeth care is, a good chew on a bone and dental care. REMEMBER MANY INSURANCE POLICIES DO NOT COVER TEETH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Tommy and Crosby must feel very relieved that their mouths aren't sore with such rotten teeth any more! Both of them thoroughly deserve all the TLC they're getting right now. And the cat testing is going well, too. I really hope they get lovely new homes very soon.
