I think most dogs have their own wee quirks. I just noticed a new one of Belle's - she won't drink water from her bowl when there's less than an inch of water left in the bottom of it.
With the hot weather, the bowl's been getting emptied and filled up again regularly. I seldom let the water level drop to only about an inch (mainly because I think both the dogs wash their faces in it) but with their water consumption going up lately, there have been a couple of times the level's sunk that low. Yesterday I forgot to refill the bowl, and was amazed when I came into the kitchen and found Belle very gingerly lapping at the final inch, obviously thirsty and not very happy about having to do this. I don't know what that's about, maybe she just doesn't like her tongue touching the bottom of the bowl?
Or maybe, like our older dog, she could use a good shrink.
They all are individuals and have these little quirks galore.
Chad takes the cushion out of his bed and lays near the front door if i go out. I guess so that he is there when I come home. Biscuit is not alone in his rearranging of rugs Chad is just as daft with ours.
He is also funny about water, if it is not straight out of the tap he rejects it and uses the pond (uck) or even worse water in the watering can he nearly drinks miracle grow sometimes which is quite worrying!
Biscuit is a nutter!!! But how comfy does he look on that sofa
The only quirk I've noticed with ours is that Dave digs up his bed then refuses to lay on it until I've straightened it out again So, why dig it up in the first place???
Lenny's evening bed is the two seater sofa but if his cushions aren't right he comes over looks at me then looks at the couch, asking me to sort it. So of course I get up and sort them then he gets up and snuggles down. Totally spoilt.....but we just can't help it!
Like most dogs Rosie has a thing for eating grass. Nothing unusual there. Well, she doesn't eat succulent green grass she eats the shrivelled up hay like cuttings left from the tractor. And I mean by the mouthful. She also likes to eat sticky willow when it's in season, in excess. I did ask the vet as I think she was addicted but he said it shouldn't harm her, and it hasn't.
Ruby is still coming out her shell so no odd habits noticed as yet.
Oh, have a funny one for you. We eat our tea on our laps in the lounge watching tv. The hounds just lay around waiting till it's time for a chew. Without fail as your nearing the end of your plate Lenny jumps up with a start like he's been bitten by a flee. He then stands and has a good old look at your grub. He doesn't get 'bit' any other time and Stuart is convinced he's doing it on purpose.
lol, That has to be the funniest pic i've ever seen, the look on Biscuits face is priceless
Don't know about quirks but Neo's way of greeting me when i leave him at home for an hour is to come up and header me in the b**. Have not worked out yet whether he's pleased to see me or if it's a smack for leaving him in the first place.
Daisy has just reminded me that she's a "magpie". She will collect all our shoes and take them to her bed. She doesn't do anything destructive with them, she just collects them. Then her and Dave have to lay down around all these shoes !!! Weird dog
Jenna seems to only have one wee quirk that i can have noticed, As happy as she is to roll in, lie in and eat mud. she doesn't like walking on wet grass
Little quirks... oh yes, they have them, just the one or two (dozen). To start with the drinking water: Bonnie prefers 'natural' water over the bowls indoors anytime. She'll drink out of the bird bath and especially loves drinking out of the end of the pond with the most duckweed in it. I've even seen her lap up water from the vegetable beds just after I've used the hose, which goes to show that it's not about the tapwater content of chlorine or fluorides or whatever! She just likes some added dirt.
Piper, typical second child, prefers Bonnie's bowl over her own anytime.
The one quirk Piper's been working on most has been the redistribution of wealth. She takes cuddly toys from Rhianna's bedroom and lays them down in Kyra's; takes the dog toys out on the lawn and puts them down in a heap, or lines up three or four toys in a semi-circle, pushes them securely into place with her nose and then lies down on them. On several occasions I have asked the daughters to collect dog toys from outdoors; as soon as they've been carried back in via the backdoor, Piper grabs them and runs out through the patio doors. A merry little roundabout!
She also plays matching games. The dogs have a 'cuddly' gorilla; Piper put it on the lawn and then got Rhianna's orang utan toy to put alongside it. I was impressed.
Sally does the rug rumpling thing too. Also, when she gets excited she does this weird thing where she shows her teeth and sucks air in, kinda like hannibal lector in Silence of the Lambs (nice Chianti etc...). It was freaky at first but we're used to it now. Dan does the silent snappy bark thing, oh and he also sticks his nose in my butt when he wants out!!
Yep, I've got rug wreckers too. We've a couple upstairs and one in the living room and go round at least once a day to straighten them out.
Wills is a very uncomplicated, easy to deal with boy. Loves dredging rivers and will not leave until he's taken at least half the river bed out onto the bank but that's about it.
Millie is a whinger. She will whine and girn at you until you do what she's after. That can consist of getting her a snack, letting her out, going over to her to give her a cuddle or simply re-arranging her blanket on her sofa (our two seater but HER sofa) because it's all wrinkled up! Tell you what though, you cannot imagine the traumas we have when we have visitors and someone else is on her sofa!!! Millie also likes her water out of peaty, grotty looking ditches/puddles.
Tigger is another one who likes drinking water out of any available container - the muckier looking the better. We have now had to empty every pot or container capable of gathering rainwater to stop her drinking out of them. She also stands and barks and growls whilst leaning against walls or chairs. Not sure what the meaning of this is but she seems to enjoy it.
Rosie has a couple of quirks. But I especially like the way she'll come up to you and lean into youfor a cuddle and she'll quite happily stand and lean for quite a while! She also does a low grumbley noise when you rub her ears
Vernon always paws at his bed for ages to plump it up before lying down. Iif he is lying on the carpet he still does this which results in a really annoying loud scratching sound and probably a hole in the carpet eventually. Ziggy hates to walk in puddles and the rain. When its time for their dinner I say' nummies' and they both follow me to the kitchen with Vernon poking me up the backside with his nose as if to hurry me along. Vernon is also a whiner. If he wants something he'll start off with a low whine then a whimper and eventually a bark if you've not got the message by then. He also still jumps with excitement up to my eye level when something good is about to happen. Seems like Ziggy doesn't have many quirks but honestly he never does anything but lie in bed!!!
love the pictures, very cute. Well since you've already heared about my 2 dogs i may aswell talk about those in the kennels that i work in. Each of the dogs has their own little quirks, but some have them stronger than others, for example, one little brindle female called Rosie happens to have a thing about sponges. The first time i found this out was when i was cleaning the walls of her kennel, at first i just thought that she was just being very sociable, but then i realised it wasn't me that she was interested in but the sponge in my hand, and trust me it is not easy to clean a kennel when you have a greyhound hanging on to the end of your sponge and just as i was about to leave Rosie made one last desperate lunge for the sponge, ripped a corner off of it and ate it. No very helpful.
Rosie has now started to come and bury her head into you so that you will ruffle her ears and quite often will lie on her back, feet waving in the air, if nobody is giving her attention
