Think Neo must have got a bit worried about the competition for "best black" and decided to put himself out of the running!!
Took him to a grassy area late last night and decided to let him off the lead since it was quiet for a bit of recall training. He did really well and came when called, but the last time, just as i was about to put the lead on, he ran at me like he was going to charge me but as he got close he speeded up and took off at about 40mph, i shouted after him and that's when i saw it...bugs bunny!! I now realise why he won so many races.
No amount of shouting, chasing and generally making a spectacle of myself would grab his attention. He cornered out of the grassy area at full speed around a gravel path then luckily stopped at a fence as the rabbit dissappeared down a hole. When all was calm we walked home and he was fine but it wasn't until i got into the house that i was able to see that he was leaving bloody footprints everywhere and when i checked him over i realised he has lost a claw and ripped the back of his leg although not badly. One trip to the vet later for some pain relief, antibiotics and a lovely red bandage and he is looking very sorry for himself!!
Do i think it will stop him chasing rabbits in future?? Not on your life, but it does look like he won't make the GALa.
It's such a worry when this happens. Belle did it the other week after seeing a cat. Her recall's usually fine, but it seems that (for some of them) once they see their "prey" they're totally focussed on it and don't even notice they've hurt themselves, as Neo didn't. Hope he's on the mend. And that your nerves aren't too shattered, Gail.
All the best to Neo , it is so scary when they take off like that I find myself just trying to stay calm and find the highest spot to stand on and keep whistling and calling till Cas appears, which such a relief. This is the reason that I only let her off lead well away from roads or in a secure area. Nora

Thats why ours don't get off the lead. Their instinct is just too strong. Ted will run after me if I let him off as a game but if he sees something he is totally and completely taken up with it and I could scream and shout and whistle all day and he'd still not even look at me. After a couple of close calls he doesn't get off anymore and it will stay that way until I learn how to run at 40mph. I hope he gets better soon.
It's tough, isn't it? You can't practise recall without letting them off - but once they're off, you can't always recall them...
Piper always comes back. - Eventually. It makes perfect sense to me that they can't even hear you when they go after a rabbit - with all the noise of the racetrack, an easily distractible greyhound wouldn't last 30 seconds! Personally, I still take slight risks - away from roads and small dogs - and accept the little injuries (right now, Piper has hurt the black nubbin on her wrist; it opens up every time she has a run) because she enjoys her runs so very much. Bonnie is always off the lead anyway, except near big roads; she'd go mad if she couldn't run free!
You are right Kirsten, you really have to weigh up the sheer joy they get from running free with the concern for their safety while doing what they love. I have to say that Neo's recall is really quite good considering i don't have a lot of secure areas to test him out in, and if i'm honest i'm a worrier and scared to take chances. There was a major rabbit cull in Dundee not so long ago and this is the first one i have seen in the area since then. Now that i know they are back then i really have to think twice about letting him off lead at all and it really is such a shame!!
Still thinking about changing his name to speedy or lightning though after seeing just how fast that big boy can move!!
Sorry, to hear about Neo's accident Gail. He certainly looks sorry for himself in the photo! I hadn't read this earlier when I'd pm'd you to say see you all Sunday. Those pesky rabbits Hope it heals up quick. Such a pity if the lovely boy has to miss out on showing himself off on Sunday
Poor boy! I am hoping to make it to the GALa myself and was looking forward to admiring Neo in the flesh. We'd have made a right pair anyway - Neo with his bandage and Tigger with her staples!
Hope his foot and leg get better soon. Give him a big hug from us.
Oh dear, poor Neo. Pleary sympathises cos she's ripped off her dew claw a few times. She's sending kissy-kisses to Neo and hopes he gets better very soon. Like his bright red sock!!
Poor Neo, give him a treat and some ear ruffles from us all.
It just seems that they will injure themselves and still continue on their quest doesn't it. The instinct is so strong that no amount of pain will stop them if they see a small furry.
Our Charlie was a terror for getting injured and could find hazards without trying! He had the strongest instinct of any of mine and even managed to get hurt by a cat he chased! If I could find a spot with no hazards (dogs/rabbits/squirrels) he was excellent at recall but if he saw anything he was off!We learned to scan the area first and keep him muzzled at all times if off the lead. As he got older he got better behaved but this was only after lots of mishaps. I could not allow Chad that freedom yet but I may in time.Although the house I am moving to has a huge garden for him to bomb round! Em and Chad xx
I think even the dogs with the best recall would be put to the test with a pesky rabbit around. I know I wouldn't have a hope with Sunny if she saw one.
Don't be to hard on yourself Gail. I know how it feels when they take off like this and its heart stopping. It also knocks your own confidence at letting them off a bit.
On a positive note, after the second time Sunny took off we accepted that Sunny could never get off the lead in an open space, but after nearly a year of getting off in a secure fenced area with lots of recall training we have started to let Sunny off with Zoe in the park. We still have to be very careful and watch how busy the park is and who is around and we have buldging pockets of treats (Sunny being very food motivated). But it is a little bit of hope that her recal is improving. I'm sure you will get it back with Neo soon, although if he's anything like my two he will remember where that rabbit was, so you might have to find a new area to let him off.
Shame you might not make the GALa you were really looking forward to it.
Landess, Sunny and Zoe

thanks to everyone for your good wishes for Neo. He is milking his injury for all it's worth, I'm sure his limp gets worse whenever he walks past the treat barrell
He is still too sore for me to expect him to make the trip to the GALa, such a shame cos he was really looking forward to meeting all of your gorgeous hounds but i'm travelling down with my son anyway, (dog sitter organised), i will just have to fuss over all your beauties instead
