hi all long time not been posting on here but i thought i had to after reading this mornings sunday mail.a grey called twiggy was in the newpaper and lets just say the tears fell and the air went blue at seeing this pic and readin the story, im happy to say shes in a new home and is thriving thankfully. i dont know if anyone has put a thread on about this ive only come on to say my bit.but the state of that poor animal was beyond belief, skin and bones is appropriate on this one coz thats all that the dog had on him.so ive said my bit ive vented my anger at this.

That is a disgrace.  I can't believe people have escaped some sort of prosecution/penalty for doing this to an animal!  What's with the "these are racing dogs that need lots of exercise" bit?

Am I missing something here?  Do Salukis require more exercise than greys (genuine question as I've never had any dealings with a saluki)?

The horror stories just keep coming and in my opinion the penalty (  if any) never fits the crime

I managed to snatch a piece on the TV last week about the new animal welfare bill coming into force next year. They say that people will then be penalised - not just for extreme neglect like Twiggy's case, but for depriving an animal to a lesser degree of any of it's general needs i.e. constant availability of drinking water, regular walks, etc.!!

I look forward to hearing more about this new welfare bill.

Ahhh!  I see - thanks for explaining.  There was a saluki available at the kennels where I got Wills but had to come as part of a pair (lurcher with him).  With hindsight (after what you've just explained) I'm glad I didn't get him even though he was stunning.  I wouldn't have had time for him.

Makes that story even worse!

That explains a lot to me too.

I always wondered when people were talking on this forum about their lazy greys why Casper was different. I always just thought he was an oddball. In fact I still think that. LOL!

I wouldn't call him high maintenance but he certainly isn't as lazy as some of the Greyhounds I hear about described on here!

What did it mean that they couldn't prosecute because the 'dog was not registered'? Do they mean it was not chipped, so they couldn't prove ownership?

No photo on the link but TBH this sounds like an all too common occurrence amongst certain sectors of the travelling communities and greyhound racing circles...by no means an isolated case,  very rarely results in prosecution by the SSPCA...let's hope that will change under the new animal welfare bill.

Is Casper a saluki then? Or have I completely lost the plot?!

His mum was a saluki and his dad a racing greyhound. He was bred for hare coursing. Don't worry you're not losing the plot

Right it all makes sense now coz I met (ages ago now) your partner, Michael is it?, and he was saying that Casper would be better at running up hills and Rosie would find it difficult as their muscle structure was different or something I love how Casper is completely white!! Just thought I'd say Rosie has so much more confidence now than she used to and likes meeting new dogs and would probly get on better with Casper than she first did, She accepts dogs sniffing her much better now, although she will give a bit of a grumble if she thinks they are going to far!!
