Do dogs get asthma??

Could it be what our vet described in Biscuit as reverse sneezing? It's like a sucking of air rather than outward sneeze he gets from time time, probably as often as we would sneeze. It alarmed us to begin with as well, but vet says no harm to it.

Ziggy does this sometimes. Its like he's sucking in air in gulps. Then he just stops or sometimes does a proper sneeze.

Teresa, Neo does something that sounds very similar. It's not a regular thing and like Daisy he doesn't seem in the slightest bit bothered by it. I suppose a "reverse sneeze" as has already been said is about the closest way to describe it, and as it seems there are quite a few of our dogs that do it then it's probably nothing to worry about.

If you do mention it on your next vet visit please let us know, it would be interesting to get another opinion.

The reverse sneezing sounds like something Chad has done four or so times too.

I have a greyhound medical book and I looked up asthma for you. It says incidences of it usually occur in littermates and exercise can be the trigger.

It goes on to say, signs - may exhibit wheezing respiratory sounds and a hacking persistant, moist cough after exercise.Often lasting 1 - 2 hrs in duration.Can seem like a greyhound would act if a collar was too tight.Causes are listed as environmental allergies. They can be treated with a puffer like human asthma quite successfully.

By the sound of it what Daisey is doing is not as serious as asthma and I thought I would post what the book says to put your mind at rest. It is rather like reading a human medical book - once you start looking they have every illness going!

Emma, thank you for that. As you say, Daisy isn't showing those symptons of asthma so it must be the sneezy thing.

Piper does something like this too. She half coughs, half retches, like a cat trying to bring up a furball. It doesn't seem to be connected to exercise or excitement; sometimes it happens after she's eaten, but sometimes just out of the blue. She's always fine afterwards, and not distressed.

Sounds like a greyhound thing - Bonnie the lurcher does more of a sneezy thing, kind of a moist huff...

Blue does the same. Soon after we got him we posted on the forum asking for advice as it really freaked us out! The reverse sneezing thing was the general opinion and we were advised if they were doing it for a while you can stick your fingers up their nose to bloke the airway and force them to breath throough their mouth

Have had cause to try this and it does work he normally stops of his own accord though

Cas does the same thing , not often but she does tend to do it if she has been lying sleeping and then gets up . Does not seem to bother her to much and she is always fine after it.

Rosie does it but Lenny never does. Two years ago Rosie seemed to be doing this rather a lot, especially when exercising. Just walking seemd to bring it on. Didn't think an awful lot about it as apparently dogs can suffer from pollen too and was this time of year. When Lenny started I took them to the vet. They did in fact have a bug of sorts and were given antibiotics. This cleared it up. I hadn't long moved to this new house and apparently it was like them not being used to the local bugs so to speak. They've never had a problem since. So no need to worry unless it gets continual.

My dog Tasha also does this, and I was thinking it could be asthma too, she has been the vets on numerous occasions, say its nothing to worry about, but I do worry about my baby girl, she sounds as if she is struggling for breath or her nose is blocked!

she doesnt seem bothered by it, just frustrating not knowing what it is...

on the latest visit, as it had gone worse last week, the vet said she just had a cold!!
