Mark & Spencer's on Argyle Street in Glasgow is the place for our next Can Collection. We can collect underneath the canopy at the entrance of the store, a prime location to attrack the beautiful people of Glasgow to donate to their favourite Greyhound Rescue Charity!
The dates are Saturday, October 7th and Sunday, October 8th! I have split up the days into short shifts SO if anyone has a few hours to spare and loves chatting about Greyhounds/Lurchers then PLEASE contact me! We do of course need the true STARS of the show in attendance as well and that's your lovely Greyhounds & Lurchers. I can be contacted by PM through this forum or email me at linda@gal.org.uk, you can also call the GAL info line and leave your details - 0870 888 7277
Marks and Sparks eh? dead posh like so we want all our volunteers in their best bib and tucker LOL...Seriously this is a bit of a coup for GAL, 2 days at a prime location right in the heart of Glasgow, you'll all have (hopefully) seen from the thermometer thingy on the Kennel Fund website that we're ahead of target for this year, only £3,500 needed to reach the £20,000 total for Year 1, if we're successful in getting plenty of volunteers for this one we can reach the total from this can collection but of course as ever we can't do it without you guys! if you can spare an hour or two on either of those days please please get in touch with Linda, lets make this the most successful Kennel Fund cllection of the year!
I'd love to but I can't. That's the last weekend before my OU exam and so I have to stick with the books.
Can collections are loads more fun than might be thought. I was worried about looking like a numptie at the collection that Nora organised at Tesco earlier this year. But people were really kind and very interested in the dogs. Tip! If you have a novelty fleecey coat to put on your dogs it's a real talking point! Assuming it's a freezing cold day, that is. Pearly raised loads of smiles in her cow-jumped-over-the-moon coat.
I'll be at M & S tomorrow at 10am with the necessary cans. Hope to see you all there. If you haven't been along to a can collection before I'd like to wish you luck. You'll have lots of fun, raise awareness and hopefully lots of cash.
I'll have a few home baked cookies with me, but don't let that put you off!
Good Luck to all(even though you will not need it) and Have Fun (which I know you all will) Can't wait to hear your news on the day. Keeping my fingers crossed the weather is going to be good to you too
Thanks for your good wishes Siouxsie. I have just spent the last 4 hours counting and recounting and bagging the amount from today's can collections. Total is £719.05.
More shakers out tomorrow. Lots of luck to all and I'll see you at M & S!
Joyce, fantastic amount raised. It was good to meet so many new GAL faces along with more familiar (ahem Lesley ) Dylan and Jazzy are both zonked and lying flat out after thier day out. Hopefully Jazzy appealed to someone today. I just wish Id remembered my camera.
Good luck tomorrow we cant be with you in person but will be with you in spirit.
well done Joyce and all todays 'shakers'...of course after Scotlands historic win today you guys should have stayed on a bit longer and collected from the drunken revelers!!...
To be honest we met quite a few of the revellers even before the match started - one of them nearly knocked me out with the fumes of alcohol from his breath
Had a great afteroon and it was very nice to meet everyone - great amount raised too
Rory and Bert seemed to enjoy all the attention from the M&S shoppers and we had a few people saying they were definitely considering adopting a greyound - so that's all good news.
Well that's the can collectors now back home, and if they've any sense they will have their feet up with a very well earned cup of tea like me!
It was marvellous today at M & S. Lots of lovely people. Lots of literature given out and hopefully a few dogs homed as a result. Also think GAL may have a few more volunteers from all the chat today.
Not so many cans filled today - but with it being Sunday there were not so many shoppers about. The day flew by helped along by the pan pipes just along the road from us. The only down side to that was Denise dancing to the music!
Well the total is in.... Today we raised £462.33!! So the grand total for 2 days of Can Collections was £1181.38!!
I would personally like to thank all the volunteers who came out the past 2 days - Helen & Lindsay, Elaine & Ruth, Claire & Graham, Lesley, Lorna, Julie, David, Lita & John, Caroline and all the dogs that came too! I also can't thank Denise & Joyce for all their hard work and support! Well done and let's do it again! What a great day for GAL!!!
Linda, that is a truly amazing amount! What a boost for the Kennel Fund. We must surely be on target for this year now. The amount collected reflects not just the people giving up their time to come and shake a can and of course show off their beautiful dogs, but also to the organisational skills of the Volunteer Coordinator for maximising the opportunity.
Oh and I somehow forgot to list another very important volunteer - THANKS TO TRACEY as well for coming down on Saturday! Sorry about that Tracey!!
I have to say - I really had a good time on Sunday and met some nice people while doing it. I will be doing this again! Hope everyone who came feels the same way and those who didn't come - hope you will try it!
Although the can collections are basically good fun and definately worthwhile. Something happened on Sunday which has had a bit of an effect on me for the past two days. I know that there are many atrocities in the greyhound industry - but when you're not really at the sharp end you don't hear much about them or come into contact with the people who perpetuate the misery. However the following is an account of just one of the contributers to my collecting can:
A guy put a pound in my can on Sunday and then proceeded to tell me how he had run 11 dogs at Shawfield years ago. He owned them and a trainer did the rest. I asked him what happened to them - he hadn't a clue. He then told me that one of his dugs had broken a leg one night. I asked him if he knew what had happened to it. He hadn't a clue about this either. He could see by my face that I was shocked at his lack of interest in their well being. I told him that I found this very hard to understand and that it was left to the likes of GAL to pick up these poor unfortunate dogs. I did also tell him that it would take more than £1 to salve his conscience. (Which I probably should not have done!) He walked away but came back and said that he was sorry that he had upset me and that I was right and that he should have been more responsible. I don't know why I am so upset about this. But when you meet the people who are in the chain of misery it brings home to you that it is not just about raising money - it is about the suffering of these gorgeous dogs.
At least I feel that he was contrite and perhaps now has an understanding of how he should have taken more of an interest in the welfare of his dogs (or maybe I am just imagining this bit)
That would have had much the same effect on me and, like you, I think I'd have said something similar. Even reading your post I have found his attitude quite shocking and distressing. I am aware of the disgraceful things that go on in the racing industry (both horses and dogs) and the thought makes me feel physically sick but I will never understand how anyone could be that casual about their lack of responsibility and duty of care towards an animal.
Joyce as you have said to come face to face with someone who quite obviously felt no responsibility for the welfare of his dogs must have been very upsetting and i think what you said to him was very diplomatic and completely understandable, i'm sure many of us would have said a lot worse. Hopefully you pricked his concience enough to make him at least feel bad about his actions even if it is far too late for the poor dogs that deserved so much better..
Unfortunately there are still far too many people involved in the industry who are still like this man and have no concience at all
I have just received a lovely email from a lady about her new addition and i would just like to let you know.
She had never heard of GAL before and by chance she was in Glasgow (she lives near Aberdeen) on the weekend of the can collections and got talking to Joyce, this lady had been wanting a lurcher/greyhound for a long time, but it had never happened - well after getting all the info at the can collection and a good chat with Joyce, she sent in her application, had her home check and now the proud mum of a beautiful lurcher girl called Amber (and she really is a beauty - i have seen the photos).
This lady is singing the praises of all involved with GAL and can't thank us enough for her bundle of joy.
and really i just wanted to share this with you to let you know, that when you are standing about outside shaking a can that the message is getting across. As said earlier this lady had never heard of GAL before.
