I got Speedy 10 days ago.. It was a bit of a shock as I got a phone call from the RGT and 3 hours later I had a beautiful Greyhound in my house.. He is a 2 year old, brindle, never raced, non-chasing slow coach. Speedy by name but not nature!
Speedy has mastered all the stairs and now lopes around the house with no problems whatsoever. He has had a shower and a bath to get rid of the kennel smell and loved both experiences! He has a bed in the kitchen upstairs and one in the hall downstairs - both are next to radiators. He is allowed on my bed by invitation only - Ha Ha!
When we go for walkies he wants to walk up to EVERYONE we meet for a stroke. Not too fussed by other dogs of any size unless they run rings around him - he just wants to join in the fun! Traffic was a problem so we had a few coffee stops outside the local Caff during rush hour and now he is fine, even with blaring Fire-engines!
The cats have all come back into the house and everyone seems to be settling in well. They stalk past him to get to me/food/look out points/comfy places and Speedy doesn't give a damn... Foxy (No1 Posh-Cat) has his eye on Speedy's bed in the kitchen. Dotty (No2 idiot-cat) has her eye on Speedy's tail and Smokey (No3 Odd-cat) loves Speedy's left over food..
The only blight on the settling-in period is that he was castrated yesterday... He only had one ball so the vet had to go looking for the other.... He is now a mass of dreadfull looking stiches in terrible places.. Last night was horrible as he was SHRIEKING in agony. The cats were terrified of him and I was a sobbing, guilty mess and took to a bottle of red... I phoned a lovely lady called Carol who rescues Greyhounds on the West Coast. She was full of great advice and calmed me down... Speedy settled on my bed at 10pm and eventually had his buttered toast and scrambled eggs at 3.30 this morning..
Today Speedy is absolutley fine, a little slow walking, but eating and sleeping as usual. I know he is in my bedroom as I can smell him farting from here! - too many scrambled eggs?? Back to proper food tonight!
He has to go back to the V-E-T for a check up on Monday but he seems fine at the moment. Stitches will come out in 10 days - until then it's no running and leaping..
Anyway - thank you all for the great welcome! I am supposed to be doing some work but am going to search the internet for a groovy collar for Speedy instead. It is Friday after all!
Just ordered Speedy a collar from Kitchcollars.... He is going to look sooo smart! We met a retired GAL greyhound the other day and he had lots of smart new gear - made Speedy look like a poor relation... His current collar stinks of the kennels so he really does need a new one - honest!
Talking about castration, I am sure Speedy will leap back in no time, I had a Burmese cat once with the mysterious problem " were is the other one " from the vet ( the burmese is known as the cat-dog) and it seems it does happen from time to time that they loose one in certain parts of their bodies, and they had to search for it, so when he came home he was like a blanket with all the stiching, but recovered well. Speedy is not alone on this one. Anyways speedy recover to Speedy and will meet up soon. Nora

Nice selection kitchcollars has. Lenny and Rosie have them for 'posh' occassions. I don't have them wearing them day to day as feel they are took heavy for running around in. Nice for walking in though and if anyone has a bandaged paw etc they wear these with a flexi. Very well made. Lenny and Rosie were featured on the website wearing the collars. Don't know if they are still on it.
Hi there - thank you for all the words of encouragement!
Speedy's new collar arrived on Wednesday and looks fab! He has lost the "orphan" look and is settling in better every day... Having a lead with knots in where he has chewed it doesn't do much for his street-cred but I have started making leads out of off-cuts of webbing from Ebay - No point stitching them as he just destroys them too fast...
His stitches will come out on Monday but he doesn't bothered by them. The vet gave me some antibiotics for his flaky skin too and that is much better. He then started nibbling his leg and chest and made them look sore but the vet suggested some antihistamines and that seems to have done the trick. Hopefully once he has finished the flaky skin treatment then he won't need the antihistamines either. I wrap his pills in cheese and we are getting through rather a lot but he doesn't seem to care!
He is fine with the cats. They are getting used to him too but are not so keen on him pinching their food. The cats seem to have learned that they need to turn up at food time and EAT -not pick at their food! This means I see more of bad-boy Foxy who usually turns up whenever he feels like it and not before...
I always said he wouldn't be allowed on my bed but after his op I relented - heres a picture of him with his new collar....
Hope I manage to get this piccy to show..
Door bell just went - On Speedys bed is a shoe my neighbour gave me - original cost £200+ - chewed!!!!!! They were great dog walking shoes.. I was so proud of having a swanky pair of shoes - now I only have one... I think I had better get on and build my dog proof hall cupboard pronto!
5 leads, 2 dustpan and brushes, 1 car headrest, 1 shoe, 1 "Understanding your Dog" book, my dinner, cats dinner and half a loaf of bread is the current score...
Great photo of Speedy cannot wait to meet him, he looks so handsome in his new collar. If it is any comfort we have lost a door, two pairs of shoes, a pair of slippers, a bin, umpteen duvet covers, food straight out of the frying pan etc,etc and she raided the fridge three times until we put a child lock on it. Thank goodness that has all changed and she just tears the odd duvet cover now and again,it does get better, promise!!!!! Nora

He looks so happy, comfy and settled in that photo! He really is a handsome lad. Looking forward to lots more photos, stories and hopefully getting to meet him sometime.
You are lucky he hasn't bothered with his stitches. Tigger had hers looking a bit red after licking at them and then, on the Monday night before they were due to come out, she took the first five out herself.
Well it is now a month since Speedy came to stay.. The list of destruction continues..
.. More cat food (of course), hat, belt, cobweb duster, several cigarette packets & lighters (yes, I need to give up!) cushion, duvet cover, door frame, bloody expensive mobile phone.. I have lost all my stored numbers for the moment but hopefully the phone will be repaired soon - I got a new one too, a spare may be a good idea..
Speedy is now allowed off lead in the park so long as he remains interested in his tennis-ball-in-a-sock and there are no other dogs around.. He loves to zoom up to it and round it several times, throw it about and maybe bring it back - or maybe not! My Mother loves him and is urging me to go away so she can look after him - this from the woman who hates dogs and is allergic - not to Speedy though.. My highly allergic mate Grant is fine with him too - his girlfriend is now desperate for a grey as she finds his fish boring! Speedy adores going to my Parents house as they have a fab garden and are near the beach, he was reluctant to get back in the car yesterday - I felt so guilty dragging him away from paradise...
Yesterday I got him a raised feeding thingy from Ikea - I could tell he was delighted - no more doing the splits on the wooden floors while eating/drinking.. He isn't so keen on plain Arden Grange but adores it with yoghurt. I like the "end results" of Arden Grange so need to buy more yoghurt and find other "gravy's" - water is just not good enough Speedy has been watching me build a dog-proof hall cupboard and sighing loudly - I suspect he is not impressed at the hidden goodies. Although he doesn't seem keen to eat plain AG at meal times - stolen AG is different!
We went on the Edinburgh walk where Speedy was amazed at all the other greys, I think he settled fairly well - it is still early days so he does bounce about a bit. He walks so fast that we nearly lost everyone a few times.. A great day out - we really enjoyed it.
We went to dog training classes on Tuesday - Speedy laid down and did "dead dog" when it wasn't his turn while all the other dogs/puppies were going utterly bonkers. The most laid back dog in the room.
Anyway, I love him to bits and he is coping really well with the sharp learning curve of home life. When I tell him he is a "Good Speedy" he bounces around and dances - so funny! Leaving him at home isn't easy as he whines when he can hear my neighbours moving about. They are really cool though and he does seem to be getting better. Staying in the car is much easier as a friend has given him an old feather (!) duvet which he adores and he doesn't loose his kong so easily..
Sounds like he is doing what Grey's do best...being completely daft and stealing everything, including your heart.. Bet you can't remember what life was like without him already
Speedy sounds as if he's having a great time settling in with you. He's quite at home already. Hope we get to meet him and you sometime. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with him.
I'm glad Speedy is settling down and enjoying life as a pet. Sounds like he has you, your family and friends all well and truly smitten. It's so easy to fall for them. I wouldn't be without any of mine.
Keep telling us your stories - we love hearing about your boy.
