If anyone can give me some advice on this I would really appreciate it!
I have had Speedy for just over 2 weeks. He started off being very intersted in other dogs:- ears up, jumping about and keen to go and see them. I dealt with that by repeating "Speedy be nice" as we walk past and holding him on a short lead... He gets rewarded for going past other dogs in a calm manner. He has improved daily and now can walk past most other dogs with little or no fuss..
He is still interested in other dogs running after balls and dances about a little bit but calms down when told "Speedy come here/calm down." We have had lots of walks in the park when there are masses of dogs running about and this has helped.
Today I took Speedy out without a muzzle. He isn't at all interested in my cats and has become so well behaved and laid back that I have left off the muzzle a few times in the past few days.... He is always on a lead when we are out though. We met a ****er Spaniel on the way to the park. Speedy came towards the dog wth little fuss and so I relaxed the pressure on the lead a bit. When the Spaniel's owner allowed it to come up to Speedy he "pecked" the other dog's back with his nose. He didn't bite or growl and his mouth was closed. The owner freaked and told me Speedy had tried to bite his dog...
To me it looked like Speedy was trying to say "C'mon let's go play" but as the other owner freaked so much I don't know what to think.. There was woman walking along the path behind the Spaniel and she wanted to pat Speedy, she didn't seem to think he had tried to bite the other dog but I was so upset I pulled him away and carried on walking.
I don't know if Speedy was in "attack" mode or "play" mode and the Spaniels owner was quite aggressive. While I would prefer him not to wear a muzzle I will not risk him biting another dog.
I would like to know if anyone recognise this "pecking" action?? What does it mean?
Blue tends to bat other dogs with his nose if he is wanting them to play or run with him. It sounds as though this is all Speedy wanted. Unfortunatly some people still think that all greys dangerous.
It does take quite a while to know how your dog will react in any given circumstance but it sounds as though you are doing a great job.
Yeah, I think the spaniel's owner over-reacted. Some greys can get a bit nippy when they're excited - Pearly once nipped a ****er spaniel on its butt because it was barking and chasing her. But she did it with a closed mouth (if you know what I mean - mostly lips, no teeth involved) and she didn't hurt it one bit.
As Amanda says, it takes a wee while to get to know your dog and all its foibles. Sounds like Speedy is just excited at all the new things that he's experiencing. IMHO, it's very unusual for a grey to be outwardly aggressive. However, if you feel at all uneasy then just carry on muzzling Speedy for the time being. It's not doing him any harm and it in no way represents a punishment to him. We walk our big boy, Harry, with his muzzle on 95% of the time. He loves it when the muzzle comes out because he knows that (a) it's time for walkies, but even better (b) he gets a biscuit every time he puts it on.
Oh! Thank you for that! I was feeling really down this morning..
I decided to take his muzzle off as he seems to be settling really well and feeding him treats for good behaviour was so difficult with it on.. I will carry it in my bag for a few days and see how we go..
Tigger does the same kind of thing - she pokes one of my other dogs with her nose when she's trying to get him to play with her. She also does it with my brother's dog, that and batting at him with her front feet. She does get a bit carried away though and needs to be reined in quite quickly.
She has also nipped my brother's dog (also a ****er spaniel) but that was because he was being a nuisance and tormenting her. He kept racing up to her and jumping up at her face and she couldn't get away because I had her on a short lead.
I'm sure Speedy is just taking advantage of being a family member and getting to do lots of new and exciting things.
Claire just to say at the beginning Biscuit was so excited wanting to meet other dogs, so we have done everything gradually. Saying hello when both dogs are on a lead, asking owners if it's ok for them to say hello etc., and on his main hour's walk during the day, our woods walk means he can get off lead for safe parts of the walk. When he is off lead, and walking ahead, and I see a dog, I say a sharp "Wait", and it means he stops (gets a treat), and waits for me to hold or put his lead on.
My problem is Biscuit is very trusting and playful to all dogs, and has had 2 bad nips so far when they get fed up of him, and it has made me wary of dogs we don't know, and I'd rather he only plays with trusted friends. It's a real hard balance, because you want them to have their time off and play time, and Biscuit really seems to need the exercise. I try to be vigilant and consistent with voice and commands, rewards etc., and I do think he is getting better, or warier!
If I could count the amount of people who have freaked out with this big lopping hound coming towards them or their dogs, with no malice or harm intended just wanting to say Hello I would have ran out off fingers by now. Cas is so friendly it is sad when she gets this negative response from people when all she wants do is say Hi and she comes away looking dejected.
Follow your instincts, Speedy is still settling in with you and he will become more confident day by day, but if he has not shown any aggression so far towards yourself or the cats then I doubt if he would harm anything on purpose, enjoy him and let him know that you trust and believe in him and he will pay you back ten fold. You know, it makes me really quite sad to read some of these posts and also makes me realise that I am really very lucky. I very rarely come across the reactions that seem so common in all these posts. For the most part, most people I meet with dogs are curious about greyhounds and are more than happy to come and admire them and speak to them (most take Millie for a grey too). I think it helps that Tigger is so laid back about meeting other dogs and keen to play. She is also extremely friendly and anyone met is an instant friend.
I get the usual comments - bet they need lots of exercising etc but other than that, they just admire them. Wills and Millie are more problematic - they work together and shout a lot when we see other dogs but as long as Wills is on a lead, Millie chickens out and hides in the trees or creeps past.
What is also good is that the greyhound population seems to be growing in the Dunoon area (I see them about but don't really know who has them or where they got them from)!
I'm sure you would have known about it if Speedy had nipped the other dog. I think he was just being curious. Vernon nudges me when he is playful and I think sometimes when sniffing things greys can forget how long their nose is!! When I first got Vernon he was crazy about meeting other dogs as I don't think he'd seen many other than greyhounds before. Now he is much calmer and has met all kinds with no problems.
I too was thinking that I've been really lucky with how people react to my two. If anything the most common comment is on their size and how gorgeous they are. Most people are curious and are happy to meet them up close. I was at Buchannan bus station one day and two wee boys came up to me. One of them said "Are you the lady with two racing dogs in Tollcross Park". Didn't know I was famous
Things are changing and we get a lot more positive comments then negative. We have a young lad when we first got Blue asking if he murdered rabbits! The same lad got really upset when we fostered Sparty and we were explaining the the reason he needed a home. He said it shouldn't be about how fast they can run but about how much you love them...how true. Claire you will get so much satisfaction as you start to change peoples' opinions of greys/lurchers. It really is a thrill when you find out that someone has given a forever home to a hound because of meeting your dog.
The spaniel owner does sound over-protective - maybe he was just worried because of the size of your dog v his dog? If Speedy had nipped, bitten or even frightened his dog I think the spaniel would have reacted in some way (like squeaking)? What did the spaniel do, did it appear scared or relaxed? Some people are not good at reading dog body language and get over protective of smaller dogs. From how you describe it, it does sound more like an inquisitive poke with the nose, or an invitation to play...but if in doubt, you could keep muzzling him for a bit longer whilst you work up to more close nose-nose encounters with new dogs? You are being very sensible in asking the other owner if it's OK to say hello, so don't see what more you can do really! When someone has a go at you like this it can knock your confidence, so you need to try & shrug it off and re-build your confidence in your dog. I'm sure it's just a blip & sounds like you're doing a wonderful job with Speedy
I think you are all right - my confidence got a bit of a bruising and Speedy just wanted to play.. I love hearing the stories though.. A kid and his mother walked past us the other day and the kid asked if Speedy was a Pit Bull!!!! The Mother and I collapsed in hysterics! Most people seem fine and Speedy is desperate to say Hi to everyone so we don't get much hassle. Really small childern are a bit scared of him but thats not supprising as he is bigger then them!
My mate brought round her 16 week old German Shorthair Pointer (nice but bonkers) yesterday and he and Speedy had a play together. Lots of nose poking from Speedy and nipping from the puppy.. Poor Speedy got his ear and tail nipped and although he squeeked - he didn't retaliate. I kept the muzzle on for the first half hour but once they settled it came off and everything was fine. My mate and I had a real laugh at the pair of them!
We are hoping to come along to the Edinburgh walk next weekend - hopefully see some of you then! I have been watching a scary movie so it's time for bed... Speedy is already there...
