Just looking for some advice. My dog, Brook, does not seem to want to go for a walk with her coat on, she rarely does the toilet with it on either, as if shes scared and I have actually taken the coat off while outside so that whe will toilet. As it is getting colder is there any advice anyone has on how to encourage her to be normal while wearing her coat?
She's maybe just not used to it, maybe never had a coat on before. Millie used to be like that, would hesitate before going to the loo with her jacket on. Since getting one of the winter coats from GAL, the one with the snood, it seems to be really comfy for her and doesnt squish her belly when she squats and she is very comfy in it now. I think it might just take time for her to get used to it.

I used to have problems with Casper wearing his muzzle when I first got him. He did hare coarsing, not racing, so he had never worn one before. He used to paw at his face, rub it off trees, the ground or even my leg and I felt really bad. I felt cruel, but I just made him wear it and eventually he got used to it. It felt like forever, but it probably only took a few weeks for him to get used to it. Now, as soon as I get his muzzle out he knows he's getting off lead and he can't wait to get it on. Surely it will be the same with the coat? Just keep putting it on when your going out with her and hopefully Brook will get used to it. Casper also associates coat, lead, buggy or poo bags as a sign that he is going out so hopefully Brook will catch on to the coat as a good thing soon enough. And she'll have to go to the toilet at some point...

Thanks for the advice. Guess I will have to be consistent, at the moment if she doesn't like it then I take it off which probably is not helping at all.
Hi, Carole - yes, if you can, just persist with it. Brook will soon learn that it's fine to toilet whilst wearing her coat. Pearly was the same to begin with. She felt a bit unsure about even doing a tiddle. Now, she dusnae care and what must come out comes out!
Hi Carole, have you tried giving a treat when Brook allows you to put the coat on...might just be enough to help her associate the coat with something good then you can gradually cut down on the treats as she becomes more used to it. Might be worth a try while you persevere. x
I think I agree with all the others. Persistance. Wills hated having a coat on (and still ducks his head when I try to put it on) however once he's out and it's miserable, he's quite happy to trot/gallop/answer calls of nature with his on. We did have some funny walks until we got the hang of it at first.
