An itch you can't scratch
Permalink Closed

This probably isn't classed as a behavioural problem, but our Belle can't scratch herself.  It's the funniest sight to see her wobbling on three legs with one hind leg waving helplessly in the air.  Her lack of balance doesn't help either, if it goes on for any longer than ten seconds she falls over.

We usually find the itch and scratch it for her, but it's something I've never seen before.  Every other dog I've had was more than capable of scratching its own itchy bits.

Tigger can be a tad unsteady at times but, by and large, has no problem.  Poor Belle, it must drive her demented at times.

Vernon regularly struggles and stumbles. Usually on the laminate flooring. Like you say I usually just call him over and scratch it for him.

I know i shouldn't laugh because the itch must drive the poor girl mad but i couldn't help having a little chuckle at the thought of her waving this leg around and wondering why the itch is not geting better

My two love nothing better than a good old scratch although it has to be said they do get in some pretty uncomfortable looking positions to reach some spots

Speedy frequently "scratches the air" with his hind leg. He has a few very itchy/sore areas so I just rub his tummy and his hind leg continues to "scratch the air" even faster! By that time he has usually fallen over... Makes me giggle...
At least he isn't actually scratching the sore areas which I dab with Witch Hazel while he lies there with a "I know I am dying - just make it hurt less" look on his face - Utter whimp!!
The Witch Hazel seems to be doing the trick as his skin is looking less sore but the Vet is keen to take skin samples if it doesn't get better..

Your poor boy!    Hope his skin problem gets better soon.  I love Witch Hazel - it's fantastic stuff.  I use it on Wills when his wee allergy pops up on his tummy.

Lenny never scratches. Never seen him. Does love behind his ears being scratched though. Very typical of greys I think.

Our Sally can spend ages scratching her neck, not realising that its actually just her collar she's getting. I usually give in and do it for her. Dan doesn't scratch himself at all, instead he comes up and nudges you until you do it for him.
