Skin allergy - advice needed
Permalink Closed

Biscuit's skin underneath (tummy etc.) has broken out inflamed and quite itchy. This issue has been off and on since April this year. Vet gave him antibiotics etc., and is saying want to do blood tests at some point when it breaks out again and is high in his blood.  Tests are very expensive (£2-300) and may result in a vaccine for him or some kind of treatment for the rest of his days.  I was a bit upset to say the least.

Is there anyone have experience of this, and any suggestions in the meantime to help ease symptoms.  It's like raised scratches, inflammation all along tummy and armpits.  I'm also wondering if I should get a second opinion?  Any good foods for this?  I tried a diluted witch hazel, but he gets quite agitated with it being put on and licks it after.

Any advice appreciated.

My sister's boxer dog had a terrible skin problem and would break out regularly and scratch til he bled, especially under his chin. Their vet recommended she change his diet to Burns and cut out all other treats and 'human' food. He has no problems now at all and is a happy chappy. Maybe a second opinion is best if you aren't sure.

Also she used pure aloe vera gel to ease it while waiting for it to clear.

Will agree with food change, but I have found James Wellbeloved has been much better when fed to alergic dogs. (not knocking Burns by the way, it's good too).

It would be essential to make sure the dog ingested NOTHING other than the food. NO biscuits, treats etc for a couple of weeks.

Cheers,

Viv

Hi

Harley had a food allergy test done recently - he had stomach upsets rather than itching but it might help you to get it done.  It is around £200 from the vets (York Test) but you can claim it back if you have insurance, which I did.

Found he was allergic to beef, lamb and white fish - so no more Markies unfortunately for him.

I use Walcol chicken and corn now and James Wellbeloved crackerjacks (turkey and duck flavours) and he is much improved now.

Might be worth considering - poor boy.  I hope he is better soon.

Thanks for these views, as it helps with a wider picture.  His hard kibble is James Wellbeloved, and has been for a year, but he does get a variety of treats in his treat bag.

The antibiotics have certainly cleared up his belly and armpits, but I think it is one of these things we will have to get to the bottom of, so I can take evasive action for him, as I can't bear to see him uncomfortable and scratching.  He has been on the tabs for a whole week and his bottom is getty runny, but hopefully that will clear up as he has his last tablet tomorrow.

Thanks for everyone's comments and concern.
