To Bed or not To Bed
Permalink Closed

Does anyone have any thoughts on dog beds? Mason has been bedding down on a duvet on the floor each night and seems happy enough, although it can go from one end of the room to the other.
I can't decide whether or not to buy a big bed for him so that he has his "own space" and, if I do, whether to get a plastic one to stick the duvet in or a big fluffy one.
Anyone else's views would be helpful

Well in my opinion dogs prefer their duvets. I spent a mental amount of money on a hard wearing dog proof waterproof bed when I got Vernon and him and Ziggy fight over the manky duvet. I'm putting the waterproof one in the car and another duvet is being handed down once I get my new one. They love to move the duvet about and get it just right before curling up, they are easy to clean and you can change the duvet covers with your decor.

Don't bother I'd say.

I have to agree with Jenny. Dan came with a big plastic bed that we put a duvet in but he'd just take it out and scrunch up the duvet on the floor. Then we bought a soft donut type bed for Sally, but she prefers the futon or the bed in the spare room! We also have a big fluffy cushion Dan lies on during the day but he won't sleep on it at night. Duvets seem most versatile and can be washed when they get really smelly. Although moving about the room can be hazardous, Barrie almost stood on Dan the other night as he'd manouvered his duvet right in front of the bedroom door!

When it comes to hard plastic dog bed versus soft duvet type, one thing that is annoying about the plastic type is that they can be tripped over and ankles definately come off worse.

definitely duvets.  we had two of those lovely donut beds but they aren't washable due to their size so they've ended up being binned.  the duvets have been washed and washed and the dogs seem very happy on them.

I vote for duvets too!  Like Jenny, I spent a fortune on a wipe down bed that Indiana point blank refused to go near let alone sleep on.  It now languishes in a corner of my classroom doubling as a beanbag...  I had a duvet on the floor but it did get messy and spread across the floor frequently.  When I visited Jane and Casper, I spied the big plastic bed with a duvet in it that Tigerlily kept trying to get in so I subsequently went out and got a couple.  I filled them with two double duvets (half price from Argos!) and covered the lot in a large fleece.  That way I can get away with washing the fleece rather than the whole duvet on a regular basis.  Neither of them try to take the duvets out but that might just be down to personality.  I also like the plastic bed because I can easily move them around the house although I get the point about stubbing your toes!

Good luck in your search for the perfect bed!

Hiya

Yep, we're a duvet family too.  All three of mine have duvets folded up and covered in fleece blankets.  They've all got a couple of old pillows each too (to go against walls/sides of drawer units etc).  Millie n Wills are very tidy for the most part and keep their beds nice and neat however Tigger likes a pigsty!    We frequently have to tidy it up so we're not tripping over it but it never lasts.

Wills had a plastic bed once upon a long ago but never used it.  My brother's dog inherited it.  He preferred a blanket or cushion on the floor so I've never bothered trying with the other two and they're quite happy with things the way they are.

I vote duvet!

Thanks everyone, I think I'll stick with the duvet. I just have to remember to look before getting out of the bed as Mason frequently ends up lying right next to it!

I've just caught up with this and i have to admit it was a question i had thought about asking before and then didn't bother because both of mine are happy enough with their duvets and fleecy blankets.

Neo usually keeps his quite neat unless it's a really cold night and he scrunches it all up...And Sally..well she just prefers the one that i am sleeping under and ignores her own

i'm afraid my two are very spoiled. Angus has a huge beanie type dog bed with a quilt on top and a fake fur throw on top of that. Jenna has a cot bed mattress with a quilt on top with a fleecy throw on top of that. More often that not tho, Jenna ends up on my bed!
