Had the dogs out for a walk today and they were enjoying messing about in the trees. Where we were walking, the river quite frequently bursts it's bank and, as a result, the ground is quite sandy. Tigger loves this and digs for Britain. Today was no exception!
Anyway, in the midst of having a daft fit and racing about like a lunatic, she decided to jump into the river. I am 100% certain that she thought it was going to be same as usual and only come half way up her legs (she could see the sandy bottom - water was very clear). She launched herself off the bank and ended up having to swim. She had her waterproof jacket on and, can I just say, they're not very effective when submerged.
The look on her face was priceless! I was doubled over laughing at her (once I got her back on solid ground). Was she worried? No, she was then zooming around having another daft fit because she was wet!
Seeing as it wasn't particularly warm I whipped her jacket off (dripping wet) and got back to the car sharpish. Fortunately we weren't far from the car (or home). It'll be interesting to see how close she gets to the water in future!
I'm amazed at how greyhounds seem to take to the water. I'm used to a number of different breeds who eye water with suspicion, but my short experience of greyhounds seems to suggest they are fearless with regard to water - both dogs have quite happily trotted into a loch (I did hope it would clean the mud off their legs prior to getting in the car but as soon as they were out they bounded into a lovely muddy patch) It will be interesting to hear what everyone else's experience is!
She wasn't too bad actually. I was quite surprised. When I took her jacket off, I checked to see how cold she was and she was ok. We did hurry back to the car and I had the heater on full blast until we reached home (less than 5 mins drive).
Enjoyed your story! Glad no chills or anything occured though.
It reminded me of one of our past dogs (some type of short coat lurcher) who was a complete idiot round water. She had a favourite dipping spot on one of our walks. One day she took off ahead of us to dive down to her watering hole. Unfortunately, the weather had been very dry, and the water level had dropped leaving a sea of mud round the edge! We found Cindy, stuck up to her elbows! Some people were having a picnic a bit higher up the bank and the looks on their faces was priceless (obviously not doggy people). Fortunately no harm was done (being a typical "Mum", I had visions of broken legs and all sorts), and Cindy was ferried home none the worse for her ordeal. She did look a bit more carefully before she leaped after that!
I'm glad Tigger was none the worse for her unexpected drenching. I don't know how our Madam Belle would have reacted. She doesn't even like putting her dainty paws into a puddle.
