Globe-Trotting Greyhounds

Having recently spent 6 months in France with my little girl Chloe I wanted to share with potential jet-setting greyhounds the problems we have encountered.

We found a vet in France that spoke English but unfortunately he sent his French speaking colleague to give Chloe her injections to travel back to the UK.  Sneaking up behind her and jabbing a needle next to her spine five minutes of high pitched screaming ensued; we were less than confident in his capabilities

Things seemed fine until we got home and a week after her jab Chloe began squealing for no apparrent reason, the vet could find nothing wrong but next morning she pulled the hair out from her side and the skin came with it.  Antibiotics and anti-inflammatories followed but the wound kept worsening, to the stage where the muscle was actually being eaten away.  Another lump formed next to this wound which was removed and stapled up.

Greyhounds are notoriously sensitive to drugs but this was such an extreme reaction my vets had seen nothing like it; at one point they thought it was MRSA.  But, at fault is a vet who injected a greyhound with too strong a dose right next to her spine.  So, if you are taking your dogs abroad - please be careful and choose your vet wisely!!!

P.S.  Chloe still looks like Frankenstein's failed experiment but is on the mend and bouncing around like a loon as usual

Firstly Sarah, Welcome to the forum to you and Chloe.

And thank you for letting us know of your awful experience in France.

I have recently know of a situation that happened were a greyhound had a bad reaction to antibiotics and this absess quite seriously and now this poor hound has bad scarring from the incident. And this happened in this country!!!!

Best Wishes to Chloe.

I also think it is advantageous to find out when registering with a vet to find out if they are use to treating greyhounds.

Thank-you, we're both pleased to be here

It was strange in France, we only saw one other greyhound the whole time, owned by a woman who pulled her car over to speak to Chloe.  That's how rare they are!

Hi Sarah & Chloe.  Slightly belated welcome to the forum.

What a horrible experience for poor Chloe (and you).  Hope she's better very soon.

Welcome Sarah and Chloe, its funny how rare greyhounds are in France. I was in Toulouse in October and tried to explain my boy Mason to our French hosts with absolutely no luck. I didn't know the French for Greyhound and the idea of dog racing seemed totally alien to them (which is nice)
Hope Chloe recovers from her ordeal
Marie

Hi Marie,

It's really strange isn't it?!  I believe they are called levretiers (spelling is no doubt completely wrong) as they are used for coursing.  I hope you both enjoyed Toulouse - strange meeting another GAL greyhound lover that has been there!

I must memorise the word for next time, Sarah. Mason wasn't with me when I went, it was the first time I'd left him and I had separation anxiety...he, of course, was fine. I absolutely loved Toulouse and the surrounding area though. I don't think I've ever seen so many poodles!!
