Hi All
Tess really seemed to attract a lot of attention for her foster appeal so I thought I'd let you all know how she got on for her first day in her new home (the jury is still out about whether she is actually a foster dog or a new family member).

Siouxie collected her from her previous home and we met at Holyrood carpark for a night-time dog exchange. Tess and Daz seemed to show friendly interest in one another so all looked well. Those of you who have seen our truck will know its a big leap into the back and I had to lift Daz in for weeks before he was confident enough to jump. Tess was very uncertain about getting in and I thought I would have to lift her. So I got Daz in first by saying "into the car, Daz" and he lept in. And seeing this, Tess lept straight in after him. Its good to have a happy confident dog for the new dog to copy.

At home we took them into the garden fist and Daz peed and Tess peed (this is significant - take notes). It was about 8 pm.

Went in and had dinner and watched telly, dogs both happy. Tess watching everything Daz does as if trying to work out how to behave. She is a little bit timid. We all went to bed very late because Kathy was packing to go away early this morning. Dogs went out about 12.30. Daz peed and pooed, Tess didn't.

All asleep by about 1 am. At 2.30 am there was an altercation down in the dogs lair. Growling, growly, snappy barking and a yelp. I was out of bed and downstairs in seconds yelling at them both and dreading a bad fight. This of course was great fun to dogs and I was greeted by both of them jumping about and wagging tails. No idea what it was about, no-one injured or even upset so I guess someone had startled awake and over-reacted!

Every one settled back down. At about 3.30 am there was whining and squeeking. I couldn't tell who it was so didn't know what to do. About once a month Daz needs to go out in the night. He doesn't mess about and I know that if he squeeks he really needs an urgent poo. So I never ignore it and he never takes advantage. On the other hand, if it was Tess, I was going to ignore it. In the end I went down about 4.15 am and took them both out. Daz shot round and round the garden so fast I could hardly see him. Tess was bowing and bouncing and barking to encourage him. Then Daz peed, Tess didn't, and we went back in. I tucked Daz back in. Tess doesn't like being tucked in (must be her hard, tough collie side). And we all went back to sleep.

6 am. Got up to go to the airport. Took them both to the garden (Daz peed, Tess didn't) then shut them in the dogs lair with kongs of peanut butter and went out about 7 am.

9.30 am. Got home from the airport. Dogs happy to see me but not bothered about being left. Went into the garden. Daz peed, Tess didn't.

11.30 am. Decided to take the Dogs to Vogrie, thought Tess would like it and Daz gets off-lead running the whole time we're there. "get in the car" and they both lept in, no hesitation at all from Tess this time- its a hugh leap for her, she's tiny compared to Daz. When we got there Daz peed as soon as he got out of the car, so did Tess!! Thats an incredible 16 hours since her last pee! Tess also pooed once. I lost count of how many times Daz peed, he pooed twice.

We had a good walk. Tess stayed on the lead and walks very nicely. Daz went after deer twice but stopped and came back when called (hope Tess is taking notes). Tess's ears shot up and she strutted to the end of her lead each time the deerhunter shot past! They both got bits of chicken each time Daz broke off his hunting and came back to me so I hope she's learning from him that hunting = shouting but recall = chicken!!

Since we got back they've been dozing. Its all very peaceful. They don't need another walk but I might take them for a leg stretcher later if I feel like it.

Over all she's settled in well and hasn't tried to get on the furniture. I don't really let them on the furniture and Daz hadn't lived in a house before so it was never a big deal to him. He just accepts it. Though he does get on my chair if he's very anxious about anything and its just so funny to see his expression because he knows he'll be asked to get down. I bet once Tess settles in she'll take a crack at the sofa and Daz will decide its fair game too then!

Here are some pics of them last night and this morning:

On Daz's bed in the "lair" Daz tucked in, Tess too "collie" for being tucked in like a girlie. Death ray eyes are also from the collie side of the family!

Tess lies lying along the stair. She ended up sleeping here most of the night. This is looking straight down from the landing with Tess lying on the stair below the dog-gate.

Here she is on the next landing:

This is Daz at the top

And finally Tess in kathy's office

Isn't she sweet!

Wow!  Peter thats some first day you have had very busy and very tiring. Sounds like Daz is enjoying Tess,s company and if she turns out half as good as Daz she will be a corker. Well done on taking her onboard, she looks gorgeous in the photos cannot wait to meet her. Nora

Thanks for the update and photos.  It's nice to hear about Tess given she was messed about last week.  I think she sounds quite a clever girl because she is watching Daz and seeing what the routines are etc., and that's quite sharp really.  Sounds like she is taking her lead from the confident Daz, and also that he is taken to her as well.

lots of luck with her, and look forward to more news

Well, she's clearly settled in so very well with you all.  Beautiful pictures of a very clever girly - i think the jury might have finally reached a verdict eh?  She's just gotta be a keeper now

This is quite possibly the funniest post I have ever read - well done Peter for making us laugh with Tess' antics.  I may even use it (with your permission) for a lesson on how to create humour in writing!  Sounds like you're quite taken with her and there will be no way she's heading anywhere else.

You sure it's a collie mix?  Could it be camel/lurcher?

Great news though that she has settled in so quickly and it's amazing how shrewd she is.  Will be waiting for the next update and photos eagerly.

Peter,

Loved the update of Tess (your foster dog ). gave me a laugh.

It was really good watching her last night following Daz and taking that giant leap into your truck.

Can't wait to hear more updates.

also love the photo of Daz tucked in, now that really is tucked in

Peter

I had to come back onto the forum tonight to see if you had posted about Tess.. So pleased to hear she is settling in well and Daz is teaching her well. I do hope she has found her "forever home" - sounds like she is learning fast and keen to stay with you all..
On a side note - Speedy can hold on for eternity! The  longest was for 20 hours!  - and the back door was open so he could have gone out if he wanted to! Daft dog..

Best wishes to you all..

Claire 'n Speedy

Congratulations for what looks like a happy end to a very sad story. Tess sounds lovely and is far too pretty to be a foster dog

Hi
Thanks for everyone's warm comments about Tess's first day. She seems completely settled in now and there is not much to report. Both dogs slept soundly right through the night from midnight to about 9.30 this morning.

The only thing to mention is that they are both a bit unsettled about eating. I've been feeding them at the same time (though bear in mind they've only had two meals here so far). Putting Daz's food in his bowl and Tess's food into a new bowl. Tess slowly started eating her food with Daz watching. She stopped half way through and went over for a drink, at which point Daz went round behind her and finished her food. She then had a bit of Daz's food then they both lost interest in food. Over the next few hours they've both been down to the food when the other was asleep and its now all finished. Neither of them will go hungry and there's no aggression associated with the interaction so I'm planning to just let it resolve over the next few days. There is enough food and love here for everybody!

We've been for a walk this morning and mostly the've been dozing. As I write they are both sleeping in with me and helping me work. Here are some more pictures of them.

Daz decides that sleeping on the stairs is actually an excellent idea... Why didn't he think of it before!

I'm so tiny and lonely, I'll be no trouble. Please don't send me away

That's better, I think I convinced them

See, I can even help with the business!!

She is a fantastic little dog, very friendly and biddable and she does have a sharp intelligence. I don't know how much collie is in her Isla. Her GAL notes say she's a collie/greyhound cross. A friend of Kaths has a dog that we know is a Collie/Greyhound and he is the spitting image of Tess. His name is Belay. Looking at her you can tell she's not a greyhound, her face isn't quite pure greyhound and her build is a bit too stocky and her tail has a typical lurcher turn-up at the end. She looks most collie when she puts her ears up- they go straight up in the middle of her head with both tops folded forward. I'll have to see what she looks like in a hairy black and white jump-suit! Perhaps Dave knows a bit more about her origins.

More to follow no doubt over the next few days.

Peter, Kathy, Daz and Tess

Peter, think you're smitten with your new girlie!  These new pics show her nice tiger stripes, and I see what you mean about the shape of her face, bit more triangular than a greys, but her coat looks very greyhound, and as you say the question mark tail of the lurcher, she sounds like a smasher

Typical Grey, in fact i'm surprised you can see any of him at all

Tess is just gorgeous, as others have said her stripes are lovely, she looks very settled with Daz, even if she can't see much of him

Tess looks like she's settled right in. How can you possibly NOT keep her when she's got that gorgeous 'please keep me' look on her face!!
Keep us posted on her progress. (Can't believe she went 16 hours without a pee!!)

I love the 'tucked in' photo.  My two might start demanding that soon too.  Mental note to self - must not let them see photo...

Peter there is no such thing as too many pics of greys on the forum - keep them coming!  It's lovely to see how close they have become in such a short space of time - you can't possibly not keep her - Daz for one would never forgive you!   - think she'll be a keeper!
