I discovered an interesting fact today and just wondered whether any of you out there were aware of this (it's very likely that I am just so far behind).
I had to get Wills' insulin from the chemist as my vet could not get any in for me in time. He gave me a prescription and I collected the insulin this morning. The pharmisist asked (out of curiosity) how much I paid at the vet and I gave him a rough price (insurance pays). It turned out to be approximately £14 cheaper from the chemist.
Apparently, due to fair trading rules, chemists are able to access animal medicine wholesalers (dunno if it's just certain chemists) and dispense pet medicine. He said they still have to jump through hoops and suggested that the wholesales still prefer to deal with vets however you can ask your vet for a prescription, they cannot refuse to give you it and you can get the medicine that way. If done this way, you avoid paying VAT on it.
I was aware that the monopolies commission or whoever had ruled that vets now had to provide a prescription at your request but I wasn't aware that the local pharmacy could get in animal medicines. Interesting fact. I don't imagine all of them would do it.
