We finally seem to have had a breakthrough with Dan...His behaviour over the past few months has been quite difficult, increasing aggression towards other dogs, stubborness, howling and whining in the house, then about a month ago he bit Barrie on the arm after having gone for him a few times. Thankfully Siouxsie was on hand for support and advice which was a saving grace.
Anyway we had been trying him on Seren-um and it was having a slight effect with the seperation anxiety. On Monday Barrie took him to the vet for a check up, to rule out any physical problems, and the vet prescribed Vivatonin. Our vet thinks the problem is mental rather than physical and probably related to his age. We also got the Dog Appeasing Pheromone plug in, arrived on Wednesday. Since then he has been a different dog. He is so content, relaxed and happy! There has been no whining, howling, growling, refusal to walk, or any of the other behaviours that were causing problems. He's more energetic and the aggression towards dogs has calmed down. We can even hold his attention with treats while other dogs walk past!!!
It's like a miracle cure! Still early days and now that his concentration has improved we can hopefully made some headway with training. We're just so pleased to have our cuddly, sooky, friendly Dan back. Just shows that when dogs mental faculties slip it affects their entire demeanor. Fingers crossed this progress is maintained. Thanks Siouxsie for all your help and support.
That's really interesting about the DAP, cos I wondered if they worked. It's good you can see Dan is getting relief as well, cos I'm sure it was upsetting to you wondering how to calm him. Hope it's the start of a new chapter for you all.
My friends German Shepherd was given Hills B/D (Brain Diet) and she saw a huge improvement with him. I think it has antioxidants or something in it that help brain ageing and other age related behavioural changes. She found he was much brighter, happier and his moods stopped completely. I think it is prescription only, but it might be worth a look. Jane

LOL No Chance!!!!
Seriously though, the DAP release similar scents to the pheromones of a mothering dog. The mum, a few days after the birth of her pups produces pheromones that give their puppies reassurance and feelings of safety, this being known as appeasing pheromones. So works well with many dogs with fear etc.
