Does anyone else out there find that their dogs like licking furniture?  Millie and Tigger both enjoy a good spot of licking - the sofa gets it, the mattress on the futon thingy upstairs and, on occasion, quilt covers/pillow cases.  In the last instance, you can appreciate it can be a tad offputting when you get into bed and discover a damp pillow!

Every time they do this they look as if they are in a trance, almost euphoric.  It's really strange - quite amusing to watch - but definately weird.  Moreover, what does cushion/mattress etc taste like?

Leo used to lick the arms of the sofa sometimes but we put it down to maybe Flash wiping his moustache and beard there after his tea. Know what you mean though we had a papillion that used to lick sheets and duvet covers. It was horrible. For such a tiny dog he made big wet patches and he had to be banned from the bedrooms. It was weird habit It seemed to be compulsive and he was in a strange dreamy doggy heaven when he was doing it.Ugh!

Havent noticed what you describe, but someone among my lot has an occasional nibble at wooden furniture, doesnt do any real damage, you just come across wee toothmarks here and there.

Our Keera loves to lick the arms of the couches too!! What strange habits they have!!
The other 2 don't bother - very odd and I know what you mean about the trance type state.

Not being able to think of anything else I am wondering if this licking could have some connection to the theory sometimes put forward that some dogs are drawn like magnets to chewing remote controls for the TV etc when they are left alone because they can detect shed skin particles from their owners on them? We touch the arms of sofas and beds are notorious for gatherings of shed human skin particles. Just a thought from someone that's trying to avoid doing the ironing.

Jenna likes to lick the arm of the sofa and sometimes has wee nibbles at her own bedding,. It is really strange to watch them doing it and no matter how many times i try to stop her, she seems to be unable to stop it.

funny you should say that - both Daisy and Tom lick the leather sofa and chairs. i wondered if they thought it was a side of beef ! Dave doesn't bother and none of them lick anything else, just the leather suite - how very odd.

Sorry Isla I didn't mean to be offensive but when I was years younger I trained my gsds and collies with police dog handlers and the skin shedding stuff was just part of trying to understand a dog's scenting abilities. Believe me I didn't think for a moment that someone could find it revolting....please accept that I didn't mean to post anything that anyone might find revolting.

Strange that you have put this post on here because just recently I have discovered that judy licks the pillows on the sofa till they are damp!!
The first time I seen her doing it I thought she had helped herself to the fruit bowl again as every time she manages to steal something (food or a shoe??) she brings it to the livingroom in full view of everyone. duh!!

Hi Eleanor

There was no offense taken in any way, shape or form.  It actually makes a lot of sense.  After all, they say that's what dust is.

Believe me, having dealt with cub scouts, scouts and horses, I have probably seen and heard lots more offensive and revolting things!

Teresa, Tigger is also quite partial to blue water - caught her in there once so we're now very careful about keeping seats down and doors closed!
