We have had Zak over a year now and has over the last couple of weeks, started to dig at the carpet edges and/or in front of the Tv, wall near livingroom door, in font of a table, door to understair cupboard and next to the welsh dresser in the dining room (open plan living room and dining room). This only seems to happen when we leave the house. He's never appeared to have separation anxiety before and whenever I return he's usually chilled on the sofa. When I leave the house early for the school run all the dogs have been fed (one and a half hours)... sometimes there has been digging. I go out again for say a nursery run (half hour).... nothing happens.... then later to pick up the kids (half hour) digging happens. Tonight we had to leave the dogs slightly longer for parents night at school and there has been digging again. But the dogs have been left for much longer time without anything happening at all. We are assuming it is Zak as he has shown us digging before while we have been in the house and he's been told off for it. Don't want to resort to a cage. Any ideas anyone before we find big holes in the carpet ?
I know this will sound really odd but has Zak had a dental check recently? My mum's spanial kept digging at the carpet, completely out of character, it so happend she was due at the vets for a booster. At this time it was noted she had really bad teeth. Dental done, no more digging but we thought no more about it.
A year ago Blue started digging at the rug. My Dad mentioned Holly and her dental problem. We got Blue checked out it turns out he has really bad gums and teeth. A few extracts later and we have had no more digging.
As I said it sounds really strange but we can't explain the reasons why 2 dogs were showing this behaviour and then almost stopped over night when dental work had been done.
What ever the cause I hope you get to the bottom of it soon
Thats very interesting!! Belle is doing a lot of digging, and has torn one area of carpet. She got most of her teeth out before she came to me as they were apparently in a dreadful state. I had to take her to the vet as her mouth still seemed sore, and the vet said there was still at least one canine tooth which looked pretty bad. Sounds like it might be worth taking her back. She also tries to 'bury' the food bowls, and has rubbed a raw spot on her nose, but she just keeps on 'burying'. I'll be interested to hear how Zak goes with his digging.
