Could he be stringing me along?
Permalink Closed

Hi all!

I think this is the right place to post this ......

Eddie is making real progress with the gentle leader (thanks Siouxsie!!).  Although he still whines when he sees another dog, he's certainly not jumping about anymore.  However, he did the strangest thing today and I'm not sure if he's the cleverest dog in the world and is stringing me along, or if there's a deep seated problem somewhere .....

I took them both out for a walk this afternoon.  We saw another dog in front of us and I took a diagonal swerve around them - praising Eddie all the while for walking nicely.  As soon as the dog had passed us, Eddie screamed and stood there with his foot raised.  I checked both front feet, nothing obviously wrong, yet when I tried to walk him further he howled.  I figured I would just have to go home, and as I turned around he started trotting on quite nicely. I thought "sly monkey" (or something similar!) and decided to take a different route home.  he was walking again with no problems, when we saw a dog in its own garden.  Again, he walked by better than he normally did, but as soon as we got past the garden he started screaming again.  I managed to get him to do a couple of steps, and then he walked on quite happily!!!!  We got home and he's been jumping about like a puppy!!

do you think he's worked out how to tug at my heart strings, or could it be that he associates other dogs with pain (maybe if he's been attacked in the past)?  If it's the latter, does anyone have any suggestions on how we can work through this?  He's not done this before .... but to be fair, since we got the GL we've not seen any other dogs on our walks (before the GL, there was hundreds of the blooming things!!).

Help!!

Sharon

How strange - and slightly amusing (sorry!) but beyond my limited experience.

It does make for kind of amusing reading.

My only experience of something like that is with my Millie.  If you are giving her a row for anything or if she THINKS she might be going to get a row, she holds up one front paw and looks pathetic.  At first, like you, I was very anxious in case she'd hurt her foot and only once have I found anything wrong - a wee sharp stone stuck between pads.

As mentioned, she does this when she thinks she may be in trouble or if I shout at her.  As soon as you've checked her foot, given her leg/shoulder a rub and she's had some sympathy, she's off again at the gallop.  Fly as a barrow load of monkeys!

I hope it is something as simple with Eddie.

I think he is stringing you along and doing a very good job of it too, try changing your route every time you take him out ignore the SCREAMS and walk on as if nothing has happened. If he gets no reaction from you he will soon grow bored with it and walks should become a more peaceful pastime, the little monkey!!!!.
