I think I'm right in saying that most trainers who care for their dogs always muzzle their hounds when they let them run for exercise. And of course the dogs are muzzled when they race for the same reason - all to stop biting injuries.

It is in their nature to get more competitve and excited when they run, very much so in a pack (more so than other breeds) so I don't see there being a difference when they run as pets

Steve, yes you are right, trainers protect their dogs so whats different when the dogs retire and are in good pet homes, absolutely nothing.

I agree that pack behaviour increases competitiveness and will result in nipping and grabbing or worse, but I dont agree at all that this is particularly so in the greyhound breed.

I have to totally disagree with this comment, hounds have been bred for thousands of years to hunt, the chase instinct is strong in this breed of dog, a 'pack' increases this instinct 100 times over. Add to this the thin skin of hounds and the risk of injury IMO is greater in hounds than any other breed of dog out there.

I've just been keeping out of this to see how the debate unfolded, because it was my intention in posting the pic to be a warning and learning exercise for those as inexperienced as me.  It's a real pity it is becoming personal and not about dog safety ,and human behaviour (or maybe this thread is turning into an exercise in human behaviour?).

I posted because the forum was used to invite folks on the walk, so the injury is related to the forum, and obviously of interest.

It should be noted that at least 2 "clumps" of dogs were broken up (one by me) that were obviously verging on a fight, so there is no doubt pack behaviour was in evidence. If the owners of those dogs didn't see that - then why not?  I stepped into that clump because Biscuit was on the edge of it, and it was evident from the noise and stances, it would only take one dog to fly at another.

A second point I feel forced to make now, is that no other owner stopped to check which hound had been injured when Biscuit yelped in pain.  Owners certainly turned around, checked it was not their dog, and walked on.  Take from that what you will.

I'm not sure where the phrase "dog eat dog" comes from?

OK, probably about time this thread was closed, the forum moderators will allow a certain amount of 'lively' debate but when personal attacks are published they will be deleted then the thread closed. I've deleted the personal comments from this thread and now will close it.

I get the last comment, tough. I think it's in everyone's interests to take heed of Biscuits story as a warning to all of the dangers of large packs of strange dogs running off lead together, this is my personal opinion but is also the opinion of GAL and the GAL commitee (hence our strict 'on lead' policy at all official GAL events)

Final note to all forum users, we do not have any issues with this forum being used as a meeting place for like minded individuals and indeed great friendships have developed over the years however I have to stress that any events detailed on this forum or sent to member using the Private Message system unless coming from a GAL committee member are UNSANCTIONED UNOFFICIAL walks and have NOTHING to do with the Greyhound Awareness League, attendance at such events is your own personal choice and you do so at your own risk (and your dogs)

Finally we all wish Biscuit a speedy recovery from his accident and look forward for an update from Val on his progress.

cheers
dave
