Hi, I wondered if anyone could shed any light on why our dog Dexter has lost the hair of his thighs. When we rescued him six months ago they were bald, which we knew why this happened. After a period of time the hair on his thighs began to grow back in again and he had a reasonable covering of hair. However we have noticed that in the last couple of weeks his thighs have become bald again. If anyone has any helpful thoughts or tips we would really appreciate it.
i don't think there is an answer to this one. they either have bald thighs or they don't. dave has totally bald thighs and tom and daisy have a nice set of trousers !!
My Judy had the same problem, however the alopecia was spreading from her tights to her flanks, chest, neck and even her legs. So my vet took some skin biopsy samples from these areas and sent them to a lab for histopathology. What came back was very interesting, turns out she has two skin problems:
1..Cyclical alopecia. Otherwise known as seasonal flank alopecia, common in dobermanns. This is basically due to a change in environmental conditions (from living out in a kennel to living in a house with central heating etc). This explains why it was december/january time that it was at its worse with the heating on full. So really her body was abit confused?
2..Acquired pattern alopecia. Most commonly seen in greyhounds!! this is more a hair thinning than radical hair loss. No idea what the cause is or why but it is something that comes and goes.
Not sure if this is really that helpful to you but its more just reasuring to know its not something you are doing wrong!
Zada (my grey) thighs are hairy one minute and bald the next, it is not something I worry about, 2 of my previous lurchers also had baldy thigh syndrome. And with all the research I have done there does not seem to be any scientific facts that can tell us why this happens (anyone please correct me if you know different).
Some reports say it is to do with the thyroid and you can ask your vet to test.
I personally think a good old groom or rub (with or without something like aloe vera) helps as this stimulates the hair follicles which aids hair growth.
Pearly's butt is smooth and baldy whereas Harry has a nice covering. It's just one of those things. They're both moulting at the moment - just in time for the artic weather coming in!
With Tilly one minute she has a hairy bum and thighs and the next she's a baldy! We find that giving her a good groom and using a shredding blade helps encourage her hair to grow back in and putting aloe vera gel on her baldy patches. We also found that feeding her on Arden Grange really helped her overall condition esp her coat and we also put an evening primrose oil capsule in her dinner every other day which makes her coat lovely and shiny. Think with baldy patches on greys is just part of their makeup and unless there is a medical reason eg hypothyroidism then it's just part and parcel of them. If you go to any gal walk etc then you will see that the majority of greys and lurchers have the odd baldy patch!

So true.... If you get to Strathclyde Park for the next walk.......check out Mac (otherwise known as baldy bum ) I tried Olive Oil in his dinner, and he has got a couple of 'new hair' patches growing. My first greyhound came from the Vet School, where he was a resident blood donor, and he was bald. They told me not to worry as it would grow back eventually. It did, but it took 2 yrs Dexter could join the baldy bum brigade and will look like all the others. Sorry cant be of much help, but it just adds to their attraction
Just to say that I've switched over from James Wellbeloved to Arden Grange now, and I can see an improvement in Biscuit's coat, even a bit of growth on his baldy undercarriage! Although Biscuit is longer haired/broken coated, he still is very sparse underneath. I believe with running dogs, thiness underneath is to help with their cooling process, so they have probably have been thin/baldy below for many hundreds of years!
As FAJ said earlier - Pearly has baldy leg and bum again. This changes now and again and at times one thigh might be bald but the other more hair. As we changed to Arden Grange ages ago and the hair stilll comes and goes I don't beleive it is a food thing. The AG is well liked by them that's for sure and it seems to keep them in good nick though - and their poos are good too!
My theory is that Pearly likes to tantalise Harry with a bit of naked rump now and again - "You can look but you can't touch big boy" says Pearly.
