Garlic

We were recently told that garlic is very beneficial to dogs' health.  Holding noses and breaths we sprinkled garlic granules on the dogs' dinners.   A very odd thing has happened ................  no more "dog breath" !!!!  and, no, they don't smell of garlic either !  it seems to have neutralised their smelly gobs - the licky kisses are much more pleasant now!

Thought that, if you didn't already know about this, it might be useful.

I have heard folk giving their dogs garlic before, apparently it helps as an insect repellent too smile.gif My friend Nikki told me that a lot of breeders give it to their dogs as its a beneficial to a dogs health as you said above. Don't know if i want my dogs stinking of garlic though giggle.gif

I'm sure there was a post about this last year? I seem to remember one forum member saying it was harmful and another finding info that a small amount was good for them. I can't remember which one was correct. Can anyone find the post?

If it works for smelly breath Tree I'll give it a go as Sunnys breath is bleh

it seems to work on neutralising the "dog breath" and they definitely do not smell of garlic like humans do if we eat it.

my husband's friend is a greyhound trainer and he's given it to his dogs for years without any ill effects.

Dawn did you try it with Ivor? I might give it a go with Sunny, vet has checked her teeth and although they are not great he said they don't need any treatment yet so I have to find something to help her dog breathbleh

Tree what do you use? Are the granules I get for my horse ok??

I like the Mint Bonio biscuits, they help freshen her breath, but I am struggling to get them at the moment has anyone seen them anywhere (Edinburgh side)

Landess, the granules we use are the ones for horses.

Dawn, my three love the garlic - as soon as I get the pot out, they're there waiting impatiently - in fact, Dave would eat it straight out of the bag!!!

Now you tell me Tree, perhaps I should have given it to Ivor, pre his staples! I will def give it a go, cos Ivor only has about 6 teeth in total, unfortunately the front 4 are well intact!! omg.gif  But his back teeth, well they really smell, they are black and def need to come out cry  xx

Poor Ivor I hope getting his staples out goes ok. heart.gif

I had a friend round tonight and when Sunny walked up to her to get some fuss she pushed her away and said "errk you stink dog, I hate dog breath" cry. This friend is not doggie but I thought she was a bit harsh, so I think I better get that garlic out soon and give it a try. Poor Sunny.

A word of caution using garlic - please read another post in this section with the title "foods that poison your pet".

"Garlic
  • Less poisonous than onions
  • In large amounts"

So I would suggest you go easy on the garlic just in case hmm

Hi Teresa

I'm not sure to be honest - it does say in large amounts.  I would check with your vet to see what they say.
