Hi there, we've had Murphy (formerly known as Prince, and totally adjusted to his new name) since November. He's our best mate, however we would love to let him off the lead. We are working on his recall in small spaces (closed gardens, our flat), and so far he's doing ok. Obviously we won't let him off until we are confident he will come back! What would be ideal for him is somewhere fairly large and closed in. We can tell he wants to run, but are worried that if he sees another dog (which he doesn't like and cowers from, unless they are greyhound-shaped), or gets spooked by anything he'll be off. Does anyone know of anywhere in or near Edinburgh that fits the bill? Large enough for him to have a good tazz about, but closed off so he can't escape. Somewhere like this will help us with training him to come to us. Hope someone can help! Jez
Hi Jez great avatar of Murphy and good to hear he has settled so well with you and that you are working on his recall. I do not know of any place in Edinburgh that is closed in but I am sure there will be other members that might be able to help you with that. I do have a medium sized paddock next to my house if you fancy a trip to North Berwick. Please keep us informed on how Murphy is doing and all his adventures. Nora

I don't know of anywhere in Edinburgh, but like Nora I can use small or large fields that are fenced, but the fences are not high, so if he's a jumper they would be no good. I'm in Humbie (20 mile from centre of Edinburgh)
I have exactly the same problem as I want to let Jet off the lead (he's doing really well on the long lead in the park) but I know if there are other dog shaped dostractions he'll be off like a shot and all the treats in the world wouldn't get him back!!!
I'm in edinburgh too so if I find somewhere i'll let you know.
Hi Jez, if you have an extra pair of eyes then the park at Dalmeny Street, in Leith, is okay. It is completely enclosed and has a small gate at the top and heavy gates at the bottom and is mostly used by dog owners. Unfortunately my boy managed to get out by prising the bottom gates open but he is a particularly persistent Houdini and utterly untrustworthy. But if you have someone to watch the gates there is room for a mad circle run while it is still small enough to keep close. I have been hounding - excuse the pun - my local councillor about a dog park in Edinburgh, since there is one in Bellahouston Park in Glasgow. I would urge you to do the same. The more people demand the more it will be investigated.
hello murphy and jet, I get to run off the lead at Cramond beach, the worst that can happen is you might get wet although sometimes there are a few other dogs there which is great cos I love everybody. there is a field near me that is enclosed by trees with room to run about, you are welcome to join me anytime for a bit of fun. flash xxxxx
Hello All! Thank you all so much for the advice- we'll definitely check out the park in Dalmeny St, and may venture further afield as well. In the last week all things have changed anyway, as it now seems we may be moving house, so we will need to check out places near the new home...
in the meantime please say hi to us if you see us wandering down the Prom, and we'll keep everyone posted if we find anywhere decent to run about!
