As some of you may have seen from my earlier post, we are looking for a Lurcher, we have owned Terriers and Gundogs for the past 20y but never a Lurcher. What differences can we expect? Is there anything in particular we should be aware of? I have been reading all about Lurchers as much as possible before we commit to taking one on. In my job i work with all animals, but primarily dogs, i am involved in their behaviour problems etc, sadly i dont see too many Lurchers/Greyhounds though, so its difficult to know much about them. Any thoughts/advice etc would be greatly appreciated. We currently have 6 dogs, 5 females and 1 male, there is very much a 'top dog' and she quietly keeps them all in line, we have no issues over food and have never had a fight of any kind, they all sleep, eat and play together. I am open to the possibility of a male or female Lurcher, but would prefer to bring it into the household as young as possible..any thoughts on male vs female for my situation?
Whilst we await lurcher experts giving advice my amateur opinion would be to try and ascertain as much as possible the breed mix in a lurcher and the input from the dog breeds in the mix will give you a rough of idea of what you might expect from it. Don't ask what to expect from a beddie lurcher short answer is usually "trouble". Sex? again not from any great knowledge but I would say that you would be looking for an individual dog or bitch that your bitch that rules the roost will accept. What I would be wary of would be a beddie lurcher bitch....the ones that like a fight albeit they may be few and far between can land you with vet bill after vet bill for getting your other dogs stitched up. You have a notion for one of these little beauties and be sure that you get a fair assessment of its temperament I have just heard of a beddie/whippet pup that was bred and kept by a working lurcher man. I met him with his beddie and his whippet and their pup about a year ago and hadn't seen the man since. Met his brother recently and asked about the pup. It had to be sold as it was beating up its whippet Dad. Chap had had reservations about the pup when I met him.....he was obviously right. Eleanorxxxxxxx

Many thanks for your views, i see so many dogs homed to people who dont understand the breed and dont know what they are taking on..recent examples would be a client who somewhat perturbed that her JRT pup showed less than friendly tendancies towards her daughter's guinea pigs and though the dog was 'evil' or the client who took on a St Bernard (God's honest truth) and thought they grew to be the size of a Lab..having seen the film 'Beethoven' she fancied one..she also said 'they dont really slobber THAT much, do they?' I want to be as sure as i can be that a Lurcher IS for us..and give him/her a fun-filled life with our family. The right dog will come along..sooner or later!
There are many different combinations of what a lurcher is. Basically it's a sighthound, for example, greyhound, afghan hound, borzoi, saluki - crossed with another breed, like a collie, bedlington terrier etc. Originally they were bred to hunt with a greyhound's speed but also with a collie's etc stamina and brains!
I hope the right dog will come along for you soon.
I've been reading all i can and never realised how many different dogs were used..i have found it interesting. We are looking for a small Lurcher, which is why i think the Beddy x Whippet would be perfect. Someone on another forum emailed me some info about some, but they were in Norwich..about 400 miles away..typical! I have searched all the rescues, but no-one seems to have any. In the future i would love to take on a Grey..that WILL happen when my house with several acres comes to fruition...It almost did recently..until developers jumped in and paid £122K OVER the asking price...grrrrr....

Eleanor, you are far from an "amateur" with lurchers!! and secondly your Flash is a wee scruffy coated angel!!
Valerie I get a week or so swanning around with that scruffy coated angel posing as a half decent dog and my posing as a half decent owner... then the beddie demons get him and I get egg all over my face .
