Can a dog overdose on pigs ears?
Permalink Closed

I decided to give my three wee gems a treat tonight, then discovered a very empty bag of pigs ear stripsfurious Cara seems to be a bit windy tonightdoh and as she is the only one in the house all day, I am tempted to think she has been stuffing her face on the missing ears evileye She doesn't look any the worse for her stuffing, but I'll keep an eye on her for any adverse effectsashamed

Pig's ears are just protein and grease, so no major worries. They aren't quick to digest, though, and Tara's has had a bit of constipation from eating too many, which is why we try to keep her to once a week or less.

But at least Cara's eating, eh?

Cheers,
Graham

My 2 get 1, sometimes 2 a day and they don't seem to be any the worse for wear. They love them!

I have heard they can cause gas if given too many but I hear that about pretty much everythingbiggrin
Mason is incredibly fussy about pigs ears, if they are too smooth and manufactured looking he turns his nose up. I've actually offered him two and watched as he examined them thoroughly before going for the hairiest, gnarly one every time...spoiled, moi?wink

All fine on the 'pigged out on pigs ears' front. No constipation, runs, bloat or anything else. Cara seems fine, I hope the extra grease sticks to her hips. Speaking of hips, Bess seems to be filling out a wee bit hmm I have seen bitches get a bit 'rounder' after they get the op, I hope Bella doesn't get any bigger, her wee legs couldn't cope with any extra bulkcry I'm tramping round the stubble fields with them to try and work off the extra padding, it's going to be tricky working the fat off Bella and Bess without reducing Cara to skin and bone, but as you say Graham, "at least Cara is eating" biggrin

I have been doing internet research on diets for Charlie and to my surpirse pigs ears is something that is recommended not to feed your dogs or very sparingly as they are high in fat content and make them extremely hard to digest.

It was one of the first things my vet asked if Charlie got them as treats as long term they can cause digestive problems.

Bit like us a little of what you fancy does you good, though there are some things I just wont feed,I do let them have a pigs lug once in a while and a bone once a month or so,there was a spate of sick dogs I seem to remember that had picked up a bug from pigs ears, you can get good veggie/vegan foods and treats,or better still make your own then you know exactly whats in them.

They are seeimingly prone to carrying salmonella and what i didn't know is that in many countries they are given an arsenic coating to preserve them ...if you google search pigs ears, there are a lot of reports in relation to pigs ears being a huge contributory factor in pancreatitis.

Amber only once had a pig's ear, and she vomitted for Scotland.

I can't stand the look of them either, as I don't eat meat.
