Foster Homes Needed
Permalink Closed

Hi All
Well this is my first post as Fostering Coordinator (so be gentle!)

This is really an appeal for more foster homes.  At the moment GAL have very few foster homes and we desperately need more.  The value of a foster home to GAL is huge and dogs from foster homes have a much better chance of settling into their adopted homes than those straight from kennels,  in short they are much less likely to bounce.

If you would like to foster, regardless of your circumstances I would love to hear from you.  If you have cats, work full-time, have a dog already its no problem there may be a dog to suit you.  Even if you just want to have a chat about the possibility of fostering then please PM me and I will call you.

Fostering is probably one of the most rewarding things that you could possibly do.  I have and am currently fostering (think it comes with the title hmm) and I love it, every time I convince myself to take a break, a day or so later there is a new friend for Annie to play with.  Every time my foster dog leaves I smile knowing that I have given that dog the best chance that I can by helping to prepare it for its new home.

I have listed below what GAL expects from a foster home and that should give you an idea of what you would need to do/provide for your foster dog

What is expected of a Foster Home

·         Bring the dogs to events/walks, if not contact the Fostering Coordinator to arrange transport, most dogs are homed from being seen at events.

·         Show guidance to the dog on how to behave in the home and when out on walks.

·         Get them used to the home environment, hoovers, washing machines, tvs, phones, people coming and going from the home, children, being left alone.

·         Keep a diary of their routines, likes and dislikes, how long can they be left, do they  get on well with children etc.  All this will help us to place the dog in the right home.

·         Love and care for the dog like it is your own (but remember it is a foster dog, you will obviously become attached to your foster dog but try to think of the bigger picture, if you keep your foster dog GAL loses an extremely important resource.  Foster homes are so valuable to GAL and you are helping to home this dog and hopefully many more.  When your foster dog is adopted there is another wonderful dog waiting in kennels (when you are ready) in desperate need of your help and love)

·         You will be contacted by the Fostering Coordinator approximately 3 days after fostering to find out how your dog is settling in and monthly thereafter.

·         You will be given a contact number for the Fostering Coordinator who will provide advice and support while you foster.

·         Ideally you should only have your dog for approx 4 weeks although this  can (and will) vary.

Hi Jacquie,
I have been fostering for a couple of years for Gal.,but this year has been differcult. I did send an email a few days ago but have heard nothing.I am feelling very loanly with out a wee dog and now that I have no plans to go anywhere( ie Spain) I would love to have a dog. My husband and I travel a lot and we cannot have a full time pet. He doesnt miss a pet dog but I do! It is part of our deal that I foster so that I have the pleasure of having a dog. In other words I am not alowed to have a full time dog but I am alowed to foster. I do feel very sad and glad when the time comes for the dog to go to their forever home but I also feel pleased for them. I realy enjoy introducing the dog to family life. Please find a dog for me as soon as pos. PLEASE!
Can't wait

Just to say I would recommend fostering(if you can).It is so rewarding and the best feeling when one of your borrowed weans goes to a loving forever home. Even better when you get christmas cards/emails saying how happy and loved they are.

We too struggle for foster homes and yet this is so beneficial for dogs. Anybody who can foster please do. It is so rewarding. You offer a vital stepping stone in the rehabilitation and rehoming of rescue dogs. The day the dog leaves you is, of course, sad on the one hand but on the other hand you know that by providing this service you can potentially help a very great number of needy dogs. Go for it!
