We've just had Django at the vet for his yearly check and injections.   He's fine and his weight is 33.6 kilos which is the same as the last time he was there.   This surprised me as he looks a lot fatter than the last time.  Well a bit more upholstered.    You can't really see his ribs but you can feel them.   I wonder if there is some sort of optical illusion, because his coat is obviously in better condition than when we got him.
I'm not complaining, but I just wondered if anyone else had noticed something similar

It may well be Django's winter coat coming in. I know that Vegas's coat gets a lot thicker in winter which he sheds in the spring, but he's a lurcher and his coat is a lot thicker than greyhounds. But I'm not an expert. I don't know if greyhounds' coats react the same way to seasons like other dogs, but I do know that when kept outside in kennels, greyhounds tend to have an undercoat of fluff, which they shed when they're brought into a house.

Groos absolutely have a winter coat. Mason's bald bum disappeared in winter and came back this summer. His winter coat ended up in my carpet!

I filled bags and bags of hair when Tigerlily shed her winter coat. It's strange because she has an entirely different coat to Indiana. She has a much thicker coat and when it sheds it's a nightmare! I've also noticed that although she looks like she's put on a bit of weight, her weight is the same because it's muscle mass she's lost which is heavier than fat.

I like your terminology, I'm not gaining weight, I'm becoming more upholsteredwink

Jet shed a load of hair when his summer coat came through much to surprise of my lovely but obsessively tidy boyfriend who spent much of his time picking it up and remarking on the fact I told him greyhounds didn't really shed much fur, when talking him into getting one!

Jet's winter coat is starting to come in as well. He looked lovely and lean during the summer now he looks like he's eaten all the pies. (and he would if we let him!)

another quick weight question.....Max is about four and half stone, and doesn't look fat in the slightest - we can see his back ribs. But he seems to be getting quite fat around his neck - rolls of flesh seem to be gathering round his collar, and it's no tighter than ususal. Any thoughts?

That's a new one on me, I sometimes think mason's neck is fatter then realise its his winter coat, it gets quite thick around his neck - could it be that?
I'm a great believer in getting the vet to check anything unusual or different - and my vet bills will agreewink.gif

At springtime season.. I've hoovered up enough hound hair to make a whole other dog out of.. to the point where all my clothes have a mohgrey look.. Cant wear black in shedding/casting season no matter what fashion says.. smile.gif

With cats in the household it becomes even more so..

Just remember to clean your washing machine and hoover filter out at these times a well..

Great advice, I reckon the carpets in my house are 70% my old cat's hair, 10% Mason and 20% actual carpet. I've got professional cleaners coming in next week to steamclean them - we'll see what's left.

PS I bought an old-fashioned carpet sweeper for about a tenner and found it picks up hairs much better than all those high-powered pet friendly hoovers.
