The following statement is being issued by Lothian and Borders Police in relation to the death of the greyhound at Dalkeith Police Station in January this year.

A police spokesman said: 'Two police officers have been disciplined as a result of a thorough and detailed internal misconduct inquiry.

'This inquiry was started following an incident when a greyhound that had been handed into Dalkeith Police Station was later found to have died in the police kennel.

'Following the decision of Crown Office that there should be no criminal proceedings in this case, Lothian and Borders Police launched an internal inquiry.

'This has resulted in the officers concerned being dealt with through misconduct regulations, and a review of procedures for the handling of stray animals.

'We deeply regret the death of this greyhound and wish to reassure the public that we have taken all necessary steps to ensure such an unfortunate event does not happen again.'
