urgent-am I a hypochondriac?
Permalink Closed

Mason has had two firsts on his birthday. Its the first time he has woken me up predawn because he needed out, which led to massive explosion of skits at 5.45am sunday. Tonight is the first time he has whined because he needed out after his last walk (10.30pm) and had two more skit bursts at midnight.
He normally goes about 10.30pm to 9.30am at weekends without a murmour. How long do I let diarhearroa continue before calling vet? I don't want to add to my rep as the hypochondriac owner but neither do I want him to suffer unnecessarily, Any thoughts?

If Mason seems other wise alright and is still drinking plenty and eating I'd wait for another day or so, if the problem continues or gets worse or you notice a change in his overall health and character then I'd take him to the vets. Have you tried feeding him some cooked pasta? I've read some posts on here that suggest pasta or a dollop of natural yoghurt can help solidify poos. Of course please remember this is just a personal opinion if you are really concerned or worried for Mason there's no harm in calling the vets even if it is just for advice :)

I'm in agreement with Tanya, if he seems fine otherwise i'd give it a couple of days.

Cheers, he seems fine in himself but still has squits and had an accident overnight but I am a very deep sleeper and probably didn't hear him whine. He was very shamefaced this morning, poor lad! Will call vet for advice

Called the vet this morning who advised me to bring him in for a check, he also threw up overnight, but that may have just been stress at not being able to get out. He has been known to vomit spectacularly when he's worked himself into a state.
His temperature is fine but she gave him an injection to stop the nausea and some imodium which I gave him at tea-time. Gave him boiled rice and chicken for dinner (tbh he picked the chicken out and left most of the riceevileye)
He seems fine in himself but I'd feel better if something solid came out of him!
We'll see what the morning brings.

Hope Mason is feeling better soon, I do tend to starve mine for a day to see if things settle then give a small meal with some natural yoghurt the next day it seems to work for my lot.smile Nora

I've had similar things with Millie and Tigger this year so wonder if something nasty is doing the rounds.  On saying that, I think Tigger's was more down to eating something revolting!  bleh

Anyway, as the others have said, as long as they are eating and drinking  normally and seem bright in themselves, I usually starve them for 24 hours and then start them on scrambled egg (couple of small meals) the following day.  If starving them makes no difference, then it's the vet but if I see signs of improvement, I start slowly incorporating rice and chicken into the meals - usually scrambled egg for breakfast and chicken and rice for tea.  If in doubt, I'd take them to the vet as I don't like to see these things going on for too long.

I also use either natural yoghurt or Actimel in one of the meals to help build the friendly bacteria that should reside in the gut back up.

When my two have had things like this, their temperatures have been normal and the vet has usually suggested another 24 hour starvation and given me Pro-Kolin which is a probiotic type thing I believe.

Hope Mason is feeling better soon.  It's not nice for them or us.  Keep us posted.

Karen

Well he made it through the night without incident but still has the runs. I've just checked with the daycare centre and Sarah tells me has has been curled up on a couch since he arrived this morning and looks very tired and sorry for himself.
Even worse she's had two owners call in today with confirmed cases of kennel cough so I will have to keep him at home tomorrow cos if his immune system is down at all I don't want him to get that as wellcry
Think I will follow all your good advice and completely starve him, just water, overnight.
Poor boy, what a way to start seven.

UPDATE
So I collected my boy from daycare to a tale from Sarah about how poorly he had been and how he had curled in a tiny, if you can imagine, ball on the sofa and looked so pathetic they tucked a blanket around him and gave him lots of hugs.
We decided best thing is to keep him home tomorrow and give him scrambled eggs tonight since he may be lethargic because he hasn't had much food at all the last three days.
We got home and he flopped on the couch until he heard me in the kitchen. I put his scrambled egg in his bowl and he took one look and went back to the couch leaving it untouched.
The I sat down to my steak and mashed potatoes dinner...suddenly he sat upright, ears forward staring at every mouthful I had while licking his lips.
Ever the sucker I put the plate down with some potatoes, small bits of steak and the juice in it. It went in a flash.
He literally bounced through his evening walk, full of nonsense and is now roaching on the sofa and having little woof woof dreams.
The word 'chancer' comes to mind!

As my gran always said (whom I miss sorely for advice on dogs) - there's nae fear of an eating beast!

Hope he's well and truly on the mend and that it's just been a bit of a dietary malfunction (like Tigger and her sheep poo snack).

Let us know how he gets on tomorrow.  Fingers crossed. aww

Great to hear he's feeling fine. I think a bug has been doing the rounds. Indiana had it last week, and Tigerlily this week. 4am walks and the odd accident later, I'm shattered, never mind them! Folk at work have also had the same problems with their dogs recently. Here's hoping it's over for all the dogs x

I've heard similar from a few folk out and about, there does seem to be something going around. Hope your two recover quickly and you catch up on your sleep - who'd have weans eh?wink

Ahh that's good to know as Jet had the runs the other day but he has a pretty dodgy tummy and is prone to it anyway. I've spoken to the vet about him so often that I'm sure they're thinking I'm a hypochondriac mum or abusing him!

If Mason and Jet have the same vet they'll think there's something odd about greyhound owners smile

Also dogs can be chancers, Jet had a sore paw so off he went to the vet (again) who couldn't see much wrong apart from a cracked pad (Jet was really limping and occasionally hopping along on 3 legs) we were so worried he got loads of TLC as well as a few treats.

Anyway it cleared up after a day or so but then a week later I got such a fright at he came hopping up to me on three legs looking really sorry for himself. I was about to get some advice when I gave him a pigs ear to cheer him up and he turned around and all four legs ran off and jumped up on the couch with it. I was so relieved he was ok i was laughing my head off but no more pity treats!
