Very sad news tonight about a lurcher who has died after being attacked by four Rottweilers while out walking with his owner at a golfcourse in Fauldhouse. His owner was also bitten on her leg during the incident this morning. The Rotties were offlead and their owner has been charged by police. The dog called Loki was 14.
That's terrible, I still don't understand these people who keep breeds of dog known for aggression and let them run about off lead and without a muzzle. Something similar happened in the cemetery near me about a year or so ago were an Akita attacked another dog and it's owner. It really sickens me.
I feel sick, this is just so horrible. Why does this have to happen
It happens because owners don't take responsibility, and it's disgusting. What a dreadful experience for that lurcher owner, and she is injured too. I hope the Police throw the book at the owner of the Rotties
jack russells are also known for aggression but we don't have to muzzle them, i had rotties for yrs and never had a prob, no matter th breed you should be responsible enough to take your dogs to training classes, there is no more danger to a person or your pet from a rottie than from a terrier, i hate that rotties get this kind of press, it is down to the owner not the dog. Only last week i read he "heartbroken" post about the grey that had to be put down for attacking the lady's mum, it was not the dogs fault, it was the previous owner's neglect and abuse that made this happen, we always go on about how grey's get bad press and here we are doing it to another breed.............. (can u tell I'm passionate about his breed), i have 2 kids when i got Bear, then my other 2 kids arrived and they could crawl all over him ( he was VERY large) with out any bother, but i took him to obedience classes from a pup, as i have done with all my rotties. I think it's about time we started getting heavier on the owners not the dog. Rowen & Denise
There is a rottie stays across the road from me, and anyone who has met Brook (mu lucher) will know she is shy around other dogs. But the rottie is a well behaved lovable big dog who just wants to play and get attention. I agree its not necessarily the breed but rather the owners responsibility to train their dog and also the puppy farms around who breed irresponsibly, like in-breeding, causing strong aggression in some dogs.
I don't think anyone is having a go at Rotties as a breed. It is of course down to the owner who apparently was so unconcerned he simply walked off with his dogs leaving the injured woman with the body of her dog on the ground. I heard last week about a greyhound being attacked by a dog who was offlead in the Links where I walk Mason daily. Its made me anxious about his safety, and mine. Owners are responsible for their dogs full stop. I expect this man to be prosecuted under the Dangerous Dogs Act since he allowed them offlead in a pack when he obviously could not, or did not want to, control them Marie
I agree, no one wants to have a go at rotties or any other breed, it's the owners that need a good foot up the a*** seeing an old lurcher on it's own, the rottie owner should have gathered his dogs in. Tess the devil terrier round here is always on the lead, she is just a very grumpy girl with other dogs, her owners have tried everything, but it's just the way she is. She is wonderful with people and kids, it's just dogs she dislikes The rottie owner is a disgrace to all dog owners and I hope they are named and shamed. I think people like this should be made to pay for their stupidity with community service and LARGE fines. I don't blame the dogs, it's the owner I'd like to get a hold of.
What a horrible experience for the owner and poor Loki. I agree that demonising a breed is not a good thing as, the vast majority of the time, it is the owner that is to blame for not controlling their dog.
My thoughts are with Loki's owner and hope they recover from the shock and injury soon, although the experience will live with them for a long time to come. Sleep well Loki.
Sorry if my prev post read wrong, wasn't meaning to demonize a breed mainly the fact that owners do no take due responsibility for their dogs.
You'll be glad to know that I didn't pick you up wrong and I reckon most of the others on here have understood that you were, first and foremost, getting at the irresponsible owners.
hey skydivingturtle, no didn't pick you up wrong, just think there should be heavier penalties for the owners of all breeds that don't take proper care of their dogs, the man must have known about his dogs aggression, it makes me sick that anyone can go out and buy a dog with out knowing the breed and its requirements, shame for the dogs in the long run.
Sadly this kind of thing happens and will happen again. Dogs can be unpreditable and unless they are well trained and properly supervised things like this will happen. It can take the slightest thing to set off any breed of dog but when things do happen, as with this poor lurcher and its owner, but for the owner of the dogs to walk away and leave the woman with her dead dog shows exactly his mentality and proves that he should not own a budgie never mind dogs of any shape or form. I know my Chad cannot be trusted with small dogs therefore he remains on the lead unless we are on our own property. He loves kids though and loves to lick my niece who calls him the doggie car wash! I often find other dog owners let their dogs come haring up without a care in the world. I can handle Chad and no other dog would ever get hurt. Unfortunately, I have been in a situation where a dog was biting and I had to use a stick to defend us. The owner was a dot in the distance without a care in the world. I agree with everything you have said It is up to the owner to take responsibility for their dog. To have just walked off is disgusting beyond belief.
I should flamin' well hope so! Sadly, in my opinion, the penalties are never severe enough and it's difficult to police any ban on keeping dogs and ensure that it's being adhered to.
It's times like this that i think dog licencing is not such a bad idea! it's not so much about the dogs but the capability and responsibility of the owner! What a horrible scene to witness as the owner of a loved hound :0(
