Cocaine is being used by some Northern Ireland greyhound owners and trainers in a bid win races, a report into doping in the sport has revealed.

Eight have been fined after their animals tested positive for banned substances including the Class A drug.

One Lisburn owner has had to surrender prize money and pay a 1,000 euros fine after his dog tested positive for cocaine following a race at Lifford.

Some people will try anything to make a fast buck, viagra is also commonly used plus umpteen other substances, at least some sort of punishment has been given but it's never enough the dogs should be removed from their so called care and found new homes which then causes more problems for the already overfull underfunded rescues if these people have won very large amounts of prizemoney or money from gambling on their dogs at the tracks the money should be returned and given to greyhound rescues,a ban on dog ownership and a lifetime ban from all uk and irish tracks should follow, sadly dog racing is on the up and up in ireland thanks to big injections of cash and huge amounts of promotions, also there's not enough dope testing either, but this is just my opinion,i'm sure others would disagree, but it reminds me why i got out of training in the first place, such beautiful creatures don't deserve what people do to them we can only be there to pick up the pieces.

Rachel.

I'm with you Rachel - it's depressing and disgusting what people do to these poor creatures. Horses and dogs are often horribly exploited for the sake of a quick buck. furious.giffurious.gif

I don't doubt that there are responsible and kind trainers/owners out there but punishments should definately be much harsher for those that aren't!

Couldn't agree more with both of you! Punishments for mistreatment of these wonderful dogs (and horses) is deplorable! Huge fines, jail sentences and confiscation of all dogs in their care should be the norm for all offenders. Responsible owners and trainers should be blowing the whistle on those who are cruel or those who use chemicals to enhance their dogs' performance on the track. They must know who they are!

bloody hell. how disgustingly disgraceful is that. i am appalled. the trainers should be force-fed cocaine so they know how it feels. oh dear, they might overdose, what a shame.
