How did you discover GAL?
Permalink Closed

Recently I've been thinking about the best way to raise awareness of GAL. Which led me to wonder what's worked in the past. So, I though I'd ask you.

How did you first discover GAL?

As for us, Claire and I first met GAL at the Linlithgow show a couple of years ago.

Cheers,
Graham

I had been searching on the net for a greyhound forum and it was one of the top ones on Google. Had a look, liked what I saw, so joined :o)

I had been reading the paper and saw the advert in the paper that featured a wee pale coloured greyhound and had a narrative that read like a dating ad. She had such a beautiful wee face and such soulful eyes that I fell in love. I went on the internet and did a search on "greyhound rescue scotland" and found GAL. I may have looked at some of the others that came up but GAL's site was so user friendly. aww.gif

Myself and Liz have been doing voluntary work at Bothwell SSPCA centre for a couple of years and we got talking to the GAL volunteers who went there and showed out the dogs. I think it was Charles and Denise who we got talking to and learned more about what GAL was all about. One Sunday many moons ago we went to one of the GAL walks at Strathclyde Park and met the team and the people who walk their dogs. Not having a dog of our own Steve let us walk one of his foster dogs, and to walk and see so many other greyhounds and lurchers there made us determined to try and do our bit for them and also join the great team from GAL.

We had got Timmy from Greyhound Rescue Scotland a few months before I was at the Thirlstane Castle Horse Event in August. GAL had a stall at this event where I bought Tim a coat and got chatting to the GAL people and we just got more and more involved from there on.
I would say that stalls at eventing venues would be very fruitful ways of publicising GAL. Horsey people are often doggy people and when we are at events I often meet other greyhound owners or people come over and admire our dog. I could supply dates of British Eventing venues in Central Scotland for 2008 if that would be useful.

Eddie and i had only been here for a few weeks,we were out in the village one day and we spotted a lady with a grey,we had previously lost our last pet grey and could not resist going for a nosey,it turned out that the fawn girl had just come out of Bothwell and the lady was just about to take her into her home to meet her dogs as she was fostering her for GAL the lady had one of the old style GAL sweatshirts on,which stood out a mile,!!we offered our help, within the week we had a home check done, and a few days later the first dogs arrived,Frankie Blue Eyes,The lovely, but pregnant Gizmo and her late sister Bubbles and many others spring to mind, and the lady we spoke to,Mary Doran, she and her family have just left the village, and adopted the lovely Roman before they left,so thanks Mary,we've loved every minute.!!!smile.gif

I discovered GAL from a link on another greyhound website. I really liked the idea of the GAL events and the shop is one of the best on the web. So I joined. Then the first event I went to was linlithgow show with Bella.

Saw an ad in the paper and looked online to find out about the breed. Was a bit daunted by the home visit because we live in a flat and went to dog home instead. Ended up getting a grey from Cardonald SSPCA and joined the forum. Heard about Christmas show on events. Went to Christmas show and fears were dispersed so got home visit and second dog!

My love of greyhounds really started with a very small and beautiful black and white whippet which used to visit a neighbour of ours whilst I was growing up.

From then on it has always been my favourite shape of dog.

I spent a few weeks looking at the net to see if there was a charity I could help which concentrated on lurchers, greyhounds and the like.

I came across GAL and attended a couple of walks at Strathclyde Park.

The rest is as they say "history".

Had got in touch with Greyhound Rescue Scotland after seeing an advert in the paper, sadly at that time they had no dogs at the age and sex we were looking for. They gave us GALS number and that was that. Cas came to stay. biggrin Nora

Had just lost my boy Charlie and my other dog was pining really badly. I needed advice and a bit of support. I typed in greyhound losses or something equally sad and found GAL. I may be all the way down in East Anglia but I was welcomed (in a virtual way) on Gal.

Well who else would could it be .... Joyce of course !!biggrin.gif I use to meet Joyce & Amber when I was student & walked my Lachie at lunch time. Joyce mentioned what a great pet they were etc ...

We then saw the walk one Sunday & thought how nice they looked & it would be nice to be part of a doggy club as everyone was getting on.

Then we went to bothwell for a second dog & there was Denise & Kiera & the rest is history.

I think I am lucky as I live in the area where alot of GAL's promotions happen. If we could get into some other rescue centres that would be great!!

Having just recently rescued Dexter from RGT, I was grabbed by an advert in the Edinburgh Evening News about the monthly dog walk. Then Googled GAL and thought it looked like a great place to learn about Greyhounds and meet likeminded lovers.
