I posted for the first time yesterday in the "introductions" forum. Along with some photos. I am posting today 'cos I am getting myself all worked up, we have only moved up to Fife 2 weeks ago and we live 2mins from beach, so fab dog walking, well that was the idea. When we lived down south my two walked regularly with assorted groups of dogs. We knew most dog owners and had a huge meadow that they could safely run in. Their recall is on the whole v good. Stumpy will roll and nip smaller excitable dogs, spaniels especially, and he will not listen to me when he is like this. So I spend my time scanning the horizon for dogs and am putting him on the lead if I see any at all, no matter what size, but I think I am making him worse. He isn't actually aggressive and EVERY dog he meets no matter if he rolls them or what, likes him. There are lots of wee dogs here too. He did the rolling thing yesterday to a little spaniel so caught him and apologised but the owner was furious even tho all the time I was saying sorry her dog was running round a now secure Stumpy's legs jumping up trying to lick his face. I feel so much responsibility owning a greyhound and am painfully aware of how many need homes that any bad press at all is upsetting. Also my dogs are getting withdrawal symptoms from lack of doggy contact. Urgh working myself up to it now. It's sunny the tide is out, the wellies are there..... Here goes
Oh dear poor Stumpy, its understandable that other owners can be anxious, I've seen many a horrified look when Mason's started barking, growling and leaping about in a bid to play with their dogs - and that's when he's on the lead! If your patch is anywhere like where I live you'll see the same dogs and owners all the time and, hopefully the Spaniel owner will learn Stumpy is just playing...or else they'll keep it well away!! Marie

And I know about that! Local dog owners avoid me like the plague because Indiana jumps about like mad when he sees another dog He just wants to play too. When off the lead he's fine. Tigerlily is the one to watch with other dogs off-lead. Like your dog, she likes a bit of rough and tumble but not every owner sees it that way . I always keep her muzzled because at least if she is rough, I know there will be no nipping that might cause an injury and have an owner jumping down my throat. It also keeps my mind at rest and I don't worry quite so much. As Marie says though, you will get to know all the other owners quickly and it won't be so bad then
What a rotten experience for you, shame it happened. It would be great if you could meet up with other hound owners to socialise Stumpy. I have seen people pick up thier small dogs when the notice Cas and it is such a shame because she is such a big softy, but what can you do. Hope you can maybe getting chatting with the local dog owners and they start to get a better idea about hounds and that Stumpy only wants to play. Nora

I should have said I always muzzle Mason too when he's offlead. Its a personal choice and we often meet up with lots of groos who aint muzzled, but we all know our own dogs better than anyone else. For me its a training tool as much as anything else - he comes back much more easily with his muzzle on cos he knows its the only way it comes off But its a constant battle between ignorant owners who see the muzzle and assume he's dangerous to those who get that its just a precaution. Sometimes I feel sorry for him when I see the ignorant owners avoiding him in fright, then I think how much worse I'd feel if he mistook a Yorkie for a rabbit in the heat of a 40mph chase Marie
Thanks for getting back to me, well at least I see it's not just me. I have tried muzzling Stumps in the past but he literally ripped his face to shreds to get it off, the was blood pouring down his wee face, I was gutted, kept it on him in the hope he would get used to it but he kept it up for an hour, and then I confess I gave up put him in the lead and took the muzzle off. He's not a racer y'see and was kept in a shed for the first two years of his life so he's a weird mixture of nervous and enthusiastic. Literally high on life and just happy in general, if he could speak I imagine he would be sayin "ohmigod ohmigod this is sooo cool" as he tears around running practically on his hind legs. Mind you even muzzled he would still knock em flying. As he has me on many an occasion. Love the little man tho. Not the brightest but hey. Unlike Rufus who is smarter than me. Been looking at everyone's dogs on here they are all so gorgeous. Oh and also the reason I looked into this website is because last Saturday I met an ex GAL dog on the beach, I think the couple got him from here in Fife, would that be right? Anyway a big beautiful black boy called Sammy and they had had him 4 months or so. Lovely and wellbehaved too
Here's anothe couple of pics of Stumpy and Rufus, just beacause I know how to.
Cheers
Jackie
p.s Mason looks so much like Henry my big boy that I lost last year, he was a heeuge big lad too, 42kilos.
Love the middle picture, looks like Stumpy is laughing his head off Do you know Henry's racing name, it may be he and Mason were related. He cerainly sound like he was a big lad, 42kg oof, Mason only hits 35 on his 'fat' days. Marie
Henry's racing name was Gales Rebel, he was probably the most damaged dog I've seen, after adopting Rufus I started volunteering at the RSPCA, he was in two and half years before I was in the position to give him a home, as Rufus was aggressive at first. I watched him slowly give up, I used to walk him but he would just walk trembling eyes dead, no peeing or or sniffing. So after he got attacked by his kennel mate I just told OH that I literally had no choice. So home he came and to watch him change slowly was the best thing I have ever seen, turned out to be really goofy and affectionate. Anyhoo he died last Oct a massive fit brought on by the fireworks which he never came out of. Too sore for words. Want to see some pics? Or am I just showing off now? Oh he was 4 when he died.
Would love to see pix, I've looked on the greyhound-data site and there is a family link, Mason's racing name was Baby Sham and his great grandfather on his mum's side was Henry's great-great grandfather on his dad's side Skelligs Tiger. So there you go. Its a very sad tale but at least you have the knowledge that Henry had some time to enjoy life as a pet in agood home with you. Marie
Don't worry post as many pic's as you can, we all love to see pictures of the dogs and as soon as i work out how to, i'll be flooding the place with them!!!
Keep the pix coming, we all love them. It's sad about the fireworks, I used to hate watching my old lurcher during the fireworks, even sedated he was in an awful state.
Righty Ho time for the pix i will post a couple of Henry and also of Dasha, as I am new here I feel I should get both him and lovely Dasha out of the way. After Henry died I adopted Stumpy, but in December my friend who works at the shelter, called me and was sobbing about an old grey that had been adopted out 6 years ago, but was brought back in at 13, v thin, mouth full of ulcers and rotten teeth, sores on his elbows etc. So she sent me the photo in his kennel. So we had him 5 months, and it really was love at first sight, he had arthritis, so he got rimadyl, a dental and antibiotics for ulcers. Soft yummy food etc. When we lost him both me and OH cried like we had had him since a puppy. His racing name was Onehellofado, and had gone out a big fiesty dark brindle and came back an old man but had so much dignity. Had apparently never been let off the lead so when he tried to run with my two in Brandsby Woods it was amazing, he tottered about a bit, well a lot and sometimes fell,l but he got right back up and if you touched his lead he went MENTAL. SO here goes
Your dogs are lovely, I can't imagine how devastating it must have been to lose him so young, I absolutely detest the fireworks. And Dasha how lucky for him that he found you to love and cherish him in his old age.
Stumpy and Rufus are adorable, hope to meet you all at one of the walks.

ROLL ON MARCH
Oh just saw this pic of Mason, how alike are they? Is he as nuts as old Henry was? I hope so, I got Stumpy when Henry died as takng another was the only thing that made sense, but the worse part is that they would've loved each other both soo affectionate with other dogs (in the house of course)and both so NUTS. Ah well. Big sigh

Oh he's completely off his trolley, although I prefer to call it 'character', LOL
Sounds like you live close to where we are and I like to walk my dogs on the beach at Leven too. Had a few run ins with other owners who don't appreciate my lurchers rough ways! Perhaps we could meet up some time and let them run together.
Oh that would be magic. If you have seen any of my other posts, this place is hooching with Westies. Am not too sure about Stumpy with them, never tried him with small dogs and too scared to. Just pm me and we could meet up. Bet we have seen each other before I usually stay away from other dogs, well it's the people really. Or alternatively let me know what time you walk and I will look out for you.
I am going along to the walk on Sunday at Glenrothes for Celia's greyhound rescue, met them in town here and they asked us to come along. It's on their website, if you fancy turning up. On leads though. DOH.
