So I was very excited to show off Mason's brilliant offlead skills at the beach to my doubting mum and Mad Max the lab today.
We drove to Kings Barns, a nice beach well off the road, in the pouring rain and headed down the steps. The second Mason was off he went right back up the steps to the car park. 'Don't worry' I told my mum, 'he'll come back down when he realises I'm not following...a few minutes later sure enough he reappeared and was persuaded back onto the beach...for about a minute!
As I tried to call him he decided, either because Max was responding to my call enthusastically and trying to grab Mason's treat from my hand, or because the beach was covered in broken shells, he didn't fancy it.
Back up the steps he went with me at his tail.
I got there to find my bemused stepdad pointing to the coast path and saying he had just gone in the public toilets.
He reappeared, totally ignored me and trotted off in the opposite direction.
After a few minutes he finally decided to come back, well to be honest he tried to race past me and was caught by the collar, and was duly walked back to the steps to go down to the beach firmly onlead. He was adamant, however, by now that there was no way he was going back on the beach so he spent our beach walk cosied up in the back of the car with my stepdad and the heating on, while we walked Max in the wind and rain.
Who's the mugevileye.gif
I have been boasting for months about how great Mason is at the beach and he, typically let me down, in front of that daft Lab and my mother...I am mortified!

Ahaaaa

This happens all the time to me, they are the softest sweetest boys, obedient etc etc. BUT as as soon as it really matters, then offski, or backski as in Stumpy's case, hates gravel, shells, jaggy grass etc. Oh and heavy rain, so will race back and stand at the car. Wee monkey

Have to say when I told Sara at doggy daycare she said it would have been the broken shells because he refuses to walk on the gravel at the side of the centre. When the paddock is too muddy for the dogs she uses the side but says Mason will only pop out to pee before going straight back in...sensitive paws, bless him.
Despite this he came home shattered today having turned into a lunatic on seeing the paddock deep in snow.
Sara said he careered round like a crazy thing, demonstrated poor skid control, had to be dragged in twice to have grazed toes checked after crashing into things before demanding to go back for more, like a small child.
When she took the dogs for a walk they came to a huge field which was two ft deep in snow and she let them all, including Mason off for a romp.
She said he was hilarious bouncing in and out of the deep snow like a rabbit...no wonder he's snoozing tonightbiggrin.gif
