Stumpy is without a doubt Dougal from Father Ted, and Rufus is... Del Boy with a bit of the Fonz thrown in, both so different but alike. Stumpy is happy and easily confused but Rufus is sharp and a bit of a wide boy (i.e. eyeballs any dog bigger than him, in thier face no less, forgetting he is an old fella). Rufus is always getting told off for intimidating some poor Rotty and Stumpy is not safe with teeny dogs but can be seen off by the tiniest wee thing if it is fiesty enough and won't pass the cat at all and we have had to take the bell off her collar cos it was freaking him out. Oh and LOVES ballooons, sunny days and pigs ears...hee hee.

Hi

We have two dogs.

Fiddie is a glorious black dog with white bits. Fiddie is handsome, loves his food and sometimes, bless him, not the brightest, but saying that, he does surprise us a lot of the time. So, if Fiddie was a TV star, he would be Joey from Friends.

Our wee girl is Coco. She is a beautiful minky-blue/ grey and rather fine of features. She has a very playful cheekiness about her, loves her food but does watch she doesn't eat too much and loves going out walks, in all sorts of weather and splashing about in mud and puddles, but is a diva. So, if Coco was a TV star, she would be Davina McCall.

Tigerlily has an inner confidence and a glow that just speaks of Mama Morton (Queen Latifah) from Chicago. She has that 'I'm in charge' look about her and is gorgeous in her own way. She aint ever gonna win no beauty contest but if you know her, you'll fall in love smile.gif

Indiana has to be Al Pacino. Handsome but with a devilish air. He can put himself into any role dependant on the circumstances. Recently, Indiana has to be playing in the Devil's Advocate...

That's even better. Actually mine are naughty too but as long as they are not harming anybody or another dog I think it's great... I am too soft I think. Have been picking up shredded toilet roll earlier. Oh and brand new christmas slipper used to have embroidery on it

I don't mind naughty, Jets lovely really but he's scared of other dogs - sounds like your dog, was it rufus who didn't like the other dogs? he will jump on their heads given half a chance!

Most of all though is he is as hyperactive as anything within a mile radius of another dog.

Yes I t was Rufus who was dreadful with other dogs. I have been wrapped around a tree before with him straining at the lead on his hind legs, foaming at the mouth, lovely, was a doggy outcast. Took him to "grumbly dog" class where the trainer figured out he was all gob, like Jet fear related. After making tentative friends with other dog owners, some of them were absolute stars he eventually showed his true colours, which are, that he's a bossy git but as long as I have had him he has never been in a fight. Both of my boys are beside themselves when they see other dogs, this morning for eg, but as Rufus runs up and eyeballs them or Stumpy charges up and bowls them I keep em away, so back to square one until I get to know people. Not helped by Leven being the Westie capital of the world, too risky and all owned by little old people, so that if Stumps doesn't bowl the dog, then he'll probably get the owner.

In fact as they are getting so little doggy contact now ( and they used to prctically run in a pack at our other house) they are getting worse and are more and more interested. Vicious circle, probably the same with Jet do you think?

Definately a vicious circle. Jet goes to behaviour training and gets on well with the ladys dogs but we cannot keep up his meeting other dogs during the week as we simply don't know anyone with any other breeds, the ones we know are all greyhounds.

I have been fortunate as people on here have helped me by going out and about with their dogs but he really needs to meet other breeds more regularly. Also Jet seems to be on a high level of excitability, he would react to an extreme level when he was scared, foaming at the mouth, spinning round and round - now we dont think he's scared anymore but he's still just as bad but now with excitement!

How long have you had Jet now and how old is he? I know I can find this out somewhere on here but it takes me ages. Does he ever get an off lead run? I know that some just can't ever be let off but in York we had a huge meadow that ran alongside the river Ouse, the dogs could'nt get out of it and it was flat apart from raised edges so it was easy to see anyone else coming, so all of my own dogs have managed to get real excercise, which I know helped, with Rufus's aggression, Henry's extreme fearfulness and Stumpy's hyper(ness) but I was lucky but don't have that now and it's having an effect. We could be out for hours before with or without other dogs, but here it's approx 1hr each walk and they get to run like mad but I am always scanning for other dogs and they spend most if being put on and off the lead. In fact Roofie went for an OLD, FEMALE greyhound today, a first, I was gutted. Poor old girl she got a fright. I was mad at him and he knew it. Didn't talk to him for an hour eventually he tried to get up on my knee and I caved.

I got Jet in Feb last year, nearly 1 whole year now! He's 3 1/2 years.

I have been taking him to run about in a fenced off area in the park nearby where i live, so he can run about , I keep having to throw things for him to chase though as he won't go off on his own, he'll just stand and look at us as though he doesn't know what he's meant to do.

I find it hard as his recall appears to be fine when it's quiet but he would not listen to me if another dog came into sight and by then it's to late! So when out and about he is always on a lead, although he does have a long lead which we use as this keeps him under control but he can still run about a bit.

When I just had the one Rufus that is, he would just trot along next to me, would'nt even chase a ball, was a bit frustrating but as soon as I got Henry they would charge around together, and now he does the same with Stumpy, more so as Stumpy is so playful and is not intimitaded by Rufus mouthing his neck whereas big gentle Henry just stood there looking scared when he did that. Ooooh maybe you should get another one???? Hee hee.smile.gif

Yes I know about that my OH never ever wants any of them, but as he is a soft as butter is very easy to work on. We had Rufus but I had to work really really hard to get Henry and as it was getting deperate as he was becoming more and more traumatised, I got my friend who worked at RSPCA to "bump" into us with him on our walks, yes V naughty. Also Henry was massive all rippling muscles big brown eyes so made an impact. A few months of subtle and and not so subtle hints i.e. holding my breath. Well we got him, had to get a bigger car and everything. Then when he died suddenly we were both completely brokenhearted that getting another one was the only thing that could make his death easier, y'know good from bad, enter Stumpy McBoing Boing, oh hard work or wot, peeing chewing, ate 3 remote controls 2 mobiles and my wedding ring. Oh managed to get Dasha too a month later as the same friend sent Jim the photo below as he was 13 yrs skin and bone bad mouth riddled with arthritis. Had him 5 months he had a ball. Anyway it's fair to say that my OH is the worlds most manipulated man.

Have posted this one before but here it is again so you can see exactly how devious I am .

Awww poor thing (dog in the photo i mean, not your OH! smile.gif)

I was kind of working on it as GAL have a lovely little dog called Amelie who is gorgeous and we went on the GAL edinburgh walk and she and Jet went round together very well but it didn't work and he's still made of stone!!! The problem is that we also have a flatmate and tbh it is a very crowded house with just jet, I'm not sure the flatmate would tolerate another.

OH did promise that when we got our own, bigger house we can get Jet a friend but by the time that happens Jet'll be an old man on a zimmer.

Well it will happen when the time is right, but I betcha it WILL happen, greys are like Pringles, you can't have just one. I think men are able to be much more logical about all this kind of thing, looking at the bigger picture, and we see something hurting or scared and want to fix it and hang the consequences, cos if I really had thought about the expense, stress, and emotional trauma I would NEVER have had any pets myself. Best not to overthink things, mind you I always assume that bringing a new dog into the house is going to be really awful for months while we all get to know each other so that the reality is never quite as bad. Works for me biggrin.gif
