I thought I would post this as typing it might make me chill out.We adopted Rufus at 6 years and have had him 4 on 27th dec. Might be older actually as not tattooed. He has always been full on, for a greyhound that is, although as per almost everyone here's, sleepy in house, mellow with people etc loopy outdoors.

He has had a couple of "turns" where he would wake up and be completely "petrified" eyes on stalks, head swivveling, watching everything while trembling like crazy and eventually not able to walk properly, walking into tv and the like and moving constantly, but not like a fit as such. We put this down to us moving home and he's been to vet who suggested panic attacks, which is odd as he is a very confident dog, got meds for heart murmur and blood taken which showed nothing. Oh and by the way I dealt with these turns by sobbing helplessly, he only relaxed after I draped myself over him holding him tight.hmm.gif We both fell asleep like this after 8 hours one night. He woke up fine.

As he had one the other day took him to new vet here in Leven and due to bad cough which he has had since getting him and have had him checked out for many times, and due to turns, heart and now rattly lungs he is going next wed for scan, ecg and if needed an x ray, am scared as he is older, has heart issues at the very least, and our new vet who is lovely did mention risks and as I knew about them anyway, she said that it was quite important so she would know what she was dealing with. Am scared, lost one in Oct 2006 suddenly and an old one last April, it hurt badly, really badly, but Roofie is my first grey, he's my pal. So fingers x'd for The Doofster.

Everything crossed for next Wednesday and it's nothing too serious, you feel so helpless when there is something wrong with one of your hounds, but try not to worry too much as there is nothing you can do until the tests are done.

Poor you and Rufus, love that name,Your vet sounds lovely and up to scratch on greys, you could go into some sites on the web and print off info on greys and anaesthesia, and greys bloods, and ask her if she would discuss them with you to help reassure you,I had a dog with a terrible heart and lots of other serious problems and she needed surgery on two occasions and my vet could not have been more helpful, and she came through both ops fine, obviously each case has to be taken individually,Fingers crossed all will go well, keep posting we will all be here to support you and your boy.Like Katie says try to wait and see what the tests show,it's so easy to let our minds run away with us,but our babies are so special and we worry more when they get older.

Rachel.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. I am such a worrier when it comes to my pets, I am always getting the mickey taken out of me for it. The vet rang this morning and after speaking to her colleague asked that I pop round and pick up some Frusemide too, this will clear the fluid on his lungs and help his geart pump better. So am V chuffed she is genuinely concerned enough about him to discuss him long after we've gone, she's really young probably not been practising that long, but I would prefer a vet that wasn't scared to look for advice and also seems to care, his last vet (my boss..oooer) didn't seem to even like him, but was experienced vet, still he didn't seem concerned about coughs etc. So good on new vet. The worst part right now is the "sedate" walks, try telling that to Stumpy who is confused and constantly play bowing and nipping at Roofie to play, and Rufus is such a fit active old boy he's in a huff 'cos I wouldn't let him run. really I mean it, is lying with his back to me now and if I try to see his face he moves round with huge sigh. Funny old fella.

I love how dogs can get the huff thing down to a tee. It always makes you feel so guilty even though you're doing your best for them. Good luck next Wednesday. It sounds like Rufus is in good caring hands.

Hope everything goes well on Wednesday, a lot of vets are still quite new to treating greyhounds and it sounds like yours is doing everything to make sure she gets it right which is great. I know its a pointless thing to say but try not to worry, you are doing the best for Rufus.

Weelll at least he still has a brilliant appetite, wot a scoffer. He is drinking loads due to Frusemide and then peeing more as a consequence, but seems ok. Was a wild and windy walk tonight on the beach and as that seems to make em feisty, they were both up and down sand dunes before I knew what was happening. Anyway when I finally got him to stop his tongue was purple. So i get the sedate walk thing now, at least he's talking to me now. Not for long. Might take them to woods tomorrow as that makes them sniff more rather than run.

Hope the medication will help your boy's condition. He's not even that old at the age of 6. It is Understandably a worry when they're not well and waiting for results of tests/x-rays is even more worrying. Good luck at the vets next week.

Nah He's 10 yrs at least. But had him at Lochore Country Meadow in Lochgelly today, and they were great. Stumps ran around like a wee boy, but even tho Rufus sniffed everywhere, he was knackered, and did a bit of plodding. Not like him at all. I phoned my friend who was his "kennel girl" in York and she kept going on about how fit and nuts he was for an old dog. And he used to be before we moved. Stuffed his face tonight, but cried a lot last night due to some sort of pain but had been given 75mg of Rimadyl. Today had been given 50mg before walk but still limped along. l am scared, he is not that old but is like an old fighter just now, it's still there but he's just tired.

I just have to say His kennel girls name and he goes nuts as we deliberately kept in touch after I adopted him as he had been in so long, and she is due up soon for a holiday. So I hope he is the same mad old git for her. I remember her trying to persuade me to take him as he had been 14 months and was throwing himself against the gate, snarling etc. Glad I did.

i wish Rufus all the luck in the word for his tests, i'm sure he'll be just fine don't worry to much, i'm sure you know that we're all here for you even if we're only at the end of a computer. i love that he was in a huff with you lol, Rowen did that to me when i bathed him...........he's a big lad and i had to lift him into the bath, he was like bambi on ice lol, after he ran about the house shacking himself so i went onto the floor to play with him and he just stopped, looked at me then trotted off to my sons room..................he stayed there till Sean came home from school. you new vet sounds great, many times when you have been doing something for so long you can become complacent, i like the new starts because there more willing to learn with you and ask for help, she sounds great, keep us posted, all my love Denise & Rowen xx

Thanks soo much to you you lot. Apart from my best friend who is scared of dogs apart from greys (see another post) almost nooone gets it. Am sitting here silently fretting, But I know he will be okay, cos he has to be, he's me mate, really, I talk to him about stuff, like "are these jeans to tight?" or or should I paint this wall red? He never says much but that's his way. So cheers again

here he is an ordinary black greyhound, A bit naughty and with selective hearing...

Cheers again. Yes you are right that's just it, he is mine, and to the untrained eye he is nothing spectacular but to me he sweet, affectionate and gentle, with dominant tendencies with other large dogs and stubborn, grumpy old git really. Used to be really dog aggressive but just annoying now.

So upshot is he is dopey tonight, but kidneys, lungs and liver ok, heart sounds better and sending x rays off to cardio specialist. Better than I thought though. So am, happy camper
