Weeelll was exciting to me, just thought I would lure you in with a great title.
On the beach here as the tide is going out there is always loads of lovely sea birds, looking for some scoff, curlews, oyster catchers etc. My favourite is the teeny weeny little (plovers?) they scuttle along like little wind up toys all moving at the same time/direction. But the are so toaty and fast I can never get close enough to see them properly.
SO (get on with it wummin) anyway me and the boys are strolling along, and I see one trying to fly off with a much bigger crab but the crab kept pulling it under the water and they were getting carried further out, and pretty quickly I realised that the crab had the bird not the other way around. So I waded in way past my welly tops... brrr then managed to grab both unclasp the crabs claw and let it and the little bird go. Ta daaa.
Told you it was exciting. I held a Plover, it was beautiful and my boys didn't try to get it as it was thrashing in the waves, good lads. I had to tell someone, noone is in and i did phone my mate at work and she just said." riiiight, what's a plover?" DOH
Yeah it feels a bit nothingy today. But yesterday it was great, you see it was so small and pretty and it was in my hand, yes I know I need to get out more. In fact maybe I should go out now, you never know there might be some British wading bird in trouble. Time to put on my cape..... oh and wellies.
Well done for saving the life of a lovely little bird.
A few years ago I was walking round Strathclyde Park with Amber and noticed that a lot of gulls were lying dead. There was one in the water struggling to survive, so I got a hold of it, only getting my feet slightly wet, and proceeded to carry the very weak bird about 2 miles to the water sports centre.
I went in and got very strange looks. I don't think that they were too happy getting their floor wet from the gulls feathers.
Anyway, I was directed to the park wardens office and took the bird in.
I was told that the gulls were dying from botulism, as a result of feeding on rubbish in land fill sites.
I was instructed to clean my hands thoroughly!
I have not seen any needing rescued since, but wonder now that I know that it is botulism, what I would do!!
Betcha you would do the same. It's hard to see any animal in trouble and not want to help. So far I have found 3 lost dogs on my walks, have had over a period of time 4 hedgehogs and bald finch. Cut barbed wire from a cows tail and back legs, got scissors from a handy fisherman on that one. Lugged water over what felt like miles to some gypsy horses that had been tied up in heatwave, no water, food over a period of days, called the RSPCA helpline and noone came out. Found a tiny kitten slap in the middle of Brandsby woods (York), watched it for a while and realised it was in it's own, couldn't get a hold of it, so rang my friend at RSPCA she rushed out with a cat cage, and now it lives in luxury with the manager of the shelter. Seriously I was beginning to get nervous going on my walks, I mean it was getting rediculous, didn't half get the mick taken out of me.
Mind you wee bird was the first one in a long time and I was just so chuffed to be that close to it.
