Well we've had Amelie almost three weeks now and her nature is coming out more and more which is lovely to see ... but I think I've been a bit too trusting ... or naive ...
The normal routine with Amelie when we're out at work is that she has the run of our hall and the kitchen and we have a lovely dog walker who comes in during the day. As she doesn't attempt to go any where near the beds or the sofa I thought we could try leaving the door to our bedroom open during the day to give her a bit more room to move around.
Blair wasn't too keen on the idea but as I quite often leave after him in the morning and get home first I thought I'd give it a go. I wasn't going to mention it to him at first that I had actually done it, I was going to see if it was a success first.
You can no doubt see where this one is going ...
First day - everything was fine when I arrived home, no problems ...
Second day - I wasn't too sure if she'd been on the bed or not. The bed was slightly crumpled but I couldn't quite remember how flat the duvet had been when I left.
Third day - There was no doubt tonight when I arrived home that she'd been on the bed. In fact I think she'd been under the covers! Her kong toy was lying on the bed as well as her favourite toy! She had even left muddy paw prints on the duvet and sheet from when she'd been in the park at lunch time!!
I hate to have to admit to my naivety, but Blair was right! Of course she'd be straight up on the bed when we went out in the morning.
She even had the audacity to lie on the muddy duvet cover on the floor when I was changing the bed.
From now on she'll just have the run of the hall and kitchen and we now have the job of trying to stop her climbing back up on the bed even when we are here ... she's already trying it!
I think that I'm in the dog house with Amelie after the last few days!
Blair is now supporting a rather smug look on his face!
Oh dear! I must admit I do think it's a good idea not to let them on the beds or sofas, that way they know whose boss. We used to leave chairs and boxes on the sofa so that Bob couldn't get up and now he doesn't bother at all. Good to hear Amelie's getting on well, she's a lovely wee thing.
When I first had Mason I would come home to find the duvet, which I had smoothed before leaving for work, in a crumpled ball in the middle of my bed and I would say to him 'have you been on this bed' and he would look all innocent! They would make terrible criminals. Thing is, although he goes on the bed when I am out, he never gets in it with me. Its a comfort thing, my cat, whenever we moved home always could be found for the first few weeks hiding under my duvet because it smelt familiar, I don't think its that different with dogs. When left and insecure they go where they feel safe and your bed smells of you and, therefore, the safest place to be. If they are not misbehaving on it I wouldn't make it an issue. Marie
I agree with Marie, when we first got Summer home she'd pinch our slippers when we were out and take them to her bed. Then as she got more settled i'd come home and find 4 tell tale paw launch dents on the duvet where she'd obviously jumped down off the bed as she heard the keys in the front door, Like Mason when asked if she'd been up on th bed i'd get a look like 'Who little innocent moi? never' So now when we got out I put one of her blankets over our duvet cause I know she's up there in a shot when we leave :) it is just a comfort thing, when we got to bed at night she settles straight away in her own bed and doesn't try to join us. It doesn't bother me in the slightest, she knows i'm the boss hehe.
I'ts the same here, Stumpy carries one of my shoes or slippers with him most of the time, he has only had a chew at a furry slipper even then it wasn't too bad. He sleeps on the bed during the day and on his own bed at night and due to some growling a bit back is never up on it at the same time as us, but Rufus well he sleeps on the bed, what can I say he was my first and he used to have dreadful nightmares, screaming the lot, really sore to listen to, so he would settle if he could be touching one of us and we could sleep. Not ideal I know but it settles them, and if we are out they are relaxed. Just means I am always changing and washing the bed clothes, but hey.
If I was to start again I would not have Rufus up at night, but he is 11 now and it's too late to change as he hasn't been well and don't want to make any changes that might affect his "status" if that makes sense.
But if Amelie is cool with it then it's up to you. At least you won't have her running the Grand National in her sleep, kicking lumps out of you.
We'll see what day 4 brings when we get back tonight ...
She's also now discovered how to open doors, as long as she only has to push, which she'd never tried before.
I didn't mind so much that she'd been on our bed, as she may have been on it before without us realising. It was just the muddy paw prints and the spots of blood (she's still in season) on the duvet and the sheet under it.
It's still early days and we're trying to stick to our rules of not letting her up on the sofa or the beds.
We live by the seaside here, and at night as I am sliding down under the duvet I get an all over body exfoliator because of the sand...mmmm cozy. Great for the cellulite though.
I must admit to loving the fact the dogs no longer get on the bed - def less washing! Amelie sounds like a wee minx - or a typical greyhound Sounds like she is settling in very well.
