Best Toys
Permalink Closed

Just out of interest, what are they best toys you have found for your hounds? In this mad house at the moment, it seems to be the freebie things from around the house, an old kitchen roll tube, especially when you roll the ends over and fill it with treats a great puzzle for them to open. the 500ml cola bottle is another, again make a small hole and fill with treats and they have hours of fun getting the  food from inside. The paper bag provided so much fun.

Of the bought toys, the squeaky rabbit gets a look in but the best has to be the big rope toy as they can all play tug o war with that at the same time!

I know Cara just likes whatever toys another dog has!

Someone else's toy is always the best, Belle arrived with a teething bone and every time I looked round either Tara or Mickey had pinched it. I bought Tara her own one and it has hardly been looked at. We also use various bottles and boxes and tubes with treats in. In our house kong's with pâté in seem to be popular but can also be thrown very hard. Tug toys are the ones Zak likes (it took the poor boy a long time to get the idea of toys) and he will even play tug with Tara. He really likes you to throw it in the air so he can pounce on it. Apples make a good toy for Tara as she throws them around the house till they are bruised and battered and then eats them.

They both like boxes and postage bags. If something comes in the post I open it after work and I have a dog audience waiting for me to give them the wrapping to shred. It may be that they remember Christmas and unwrapping presents.

Oh how I wished Red would play with toys more. He will only take one of Lennys when no one is looking then throws it a couple of times and ignores it again. may try the home made ones tho less expensive and good eco usage..

Stumpy brings home toys from the beach, so yes nicked toys are the best apparently. All those homemade things sound brilliant. I am going to try the coke bottle one.

Unless it's furry, Jet won't bother with toys. So many a stuffed tiger/bear etc has to be hidden, inc my rabbit slippers!

Branston is pretty much the same , unless its furry/ fabric he loses interest really quicky (unless its a football). I tend to buy childrens soft toys in the sales as they seem to be a bit more robust than normal dog toys; they seem to get dismembered in the first 5 minutes...in saying that i got a couple of pics of him playing at being a surgeon the other night...so much for robust

this is him trying to hide the evidence....hmm.gif how guilty does he look!

and the "finished article" poor poor Manny!

Mason has A.D.D. when it comes to toys, except a moose which gives out a low grunt when squeezed - he acquired by nicking it from the toy stall at last summer's Edinburgh GAL show, forcing me to buy it.
It is regularly brought out when I have visitors. Nothing else keeps his interest!

Tigerlily likes anything that squeaks! No squeak, no interest! Indiana likes ropes and as soon as I get home from work he insists on a tug of war. Oh, and any food wrapping that he manages to grab when I'm not looking. And toilet rolls... And kitchen rolls... Basically anything paper that can be shredded!

Just be thankful he sticks to those household amenities, my cat only played with one thing...tamponsashamed.gif
If she found one it was hers and you could guarantee she would bring it into the livingroom when I had guests disbelief.gif
My most embarrassing moment came when I had left her at the cat and dog home for a week unaware she had one buried in her bed, imagine my horror when I returned to find bemused staff saying '..errr we found this?!?'

Rufus only likes toys that squeak too, but here's the catch, Stumpy is petrified of anything that squeaks, shakes so much he looks like he is fitting, tried to get under the bed, which makes Rufus squeak the toy even more, throwing it in the air and the like. Stumpy is so freaked out by certain noises we had to take the bell off the cats collar, as every time she moved he would leap into the air and scrabble about for a hiding place.

Toy of the moment is kong which keeps the big guy happy for ages. It's the only thing we've found that stands up to being chewed. Anything furry or squeeky is the ultimate but only lasts a matter of seconds, although he does have a furry lion that he likes to take to bed and that doesn't seems to be as battered as the rest. The funniest thing is that any time Bob passed a shop with soft toys in the window he will stop and stare!!!!

Brook and Eugene love furry squeaky toys. Although, Brook, being the delicate soul that she is, never breaks or busts anything. After about 2 weeks of having Eugene, none of the toys squeak!! But they are still intact and both of them sill like to play with them.

Pouncing is the best part for them!!

The new best ever toy is the squeaky Kong - contains the crucial squeaker, without which a toy is no good....and has lasted over a month! Usually the toy is disembowelled so the squeak can be individually chewed to death. So long lasting and cost effective at the same time!

the only toys that last with my two are made of that hard indestructable rubber that kongs are made of, they have a huge black kong, a red rubber toy, two hard rubber balls, a slightly smaller red kong and a strange lattice work rubber ball type thing.

and every now and then they get a small rope toy of some description to demolish, i think the last one lasted a minute lmao

but they only get them when i can be bothered cleaning up after them cos i end up with tiny bits of thread ALL over the carpet

Yes, the fury squeakies are definitely the favourites in our house with Max and Penny. I have a cupboard full of torn ones that I've promised to sew up but never get round to it!! (I like to think I can recycle almost anything biggrin.gif)

Max's favourite for outdoors play is his burst football. He totally loves catching it in mid air.

One of my biggest frustrations with Mason is that since he only gets offlead muzzled toy play outside isn't possible. I'm planning to move to a house with an enclosed garden in the next few months - I admit he is a big part of this decision - did anyone find they could teach older groos to fetch or play with balls after years of no interest? I would love to be able to wear Mason out like that!

Oh I am so envious Red just doesn't play with things at all. And he is only interested in treats for a very short time. Tried a kong with flavoured paste stuff huh took one look and walked away so that was a waste of money. I have given it to Lenny.

Marie, rufus was 6 1/2 ish when we got him and he had no clue how to play. Took us donks to get him to to just be silly. He did a bit when he was in the RSPCA a very specific game with his Marie, now my friend who looked after him there. He bites your arm, not a prob as it's never sore and he loves it, but I am very playful with them myelf and play bow with them both and we all rough and tumble, OH does this too. it's Rufus's only way to play when he is not outside.

Mason likes a bit of rough and tumble and goes happy crazy of you roll him on his back and give his chest/tummy a raspberry. He seems to like chasing and spinning round in circles - I just need more room. Problem is he loses interest so quickly, all the experts say you should be the one to end playtime not the dog, but I never get the chance - he just walks off and lies down!

You're not kidding, he regularly makes it clear anyone else is more interesting than me and has been known to yawn in my face as I try to encourage him to interact wink.gif

Marie, I'm sure Mason will enjoy his own garden and some outside play given time. smile.gif

In our experience even an old groo can learn how to play with toys if a doggy friend or doggy bro or sis who knows how to play shows them!!!! wink.gif
