Destruction creeping back in
Permalink Closed

Well i thought i had Nika pretty much under control, things destroyed in the house had ben neglible and to be honest  were things i kinda left out as a test, alas tonight she has stolen from the sideboard and now she and the pups have chewed through a packet of paper towels, a nice confetti they made, a packet of pens, more ink stains nowfurious
Now while this is nothing really bad i need to nip this in the bud before something more precious or dangerous take a chewing.
To date i have been trying more excercise and trying to teach her new skills to keep her mind going, tonight was a record for all parties, i left them for 6hours, maybe this was just a bit much to ask but my dog sitter fell through after i had left to work.
I really dont want ot put her in the crate as i think she wil just end up more messed up. this is the trouble as mother has said on the dog whisperer thread of a second hand "broken" dog. i have to undo this part of her nature.
I am open to all suggestions, no matter how simpole you think, i may have over looked something. i will take nothing in the wrong way so feel free to say something

i know everyones thinking it, i've got to say it!

keep all chewable items out of harms way... there i said it you can shout at me now.

i would however consider the crate though, dogs can be trained to except the crate. it just takes time.

have you tried those ball like toys that you stuff with treats to keep their interest?? or is it possible to corner off the dogs somewhere that they cant get to anything chewable?? maybe leaving them in one specific 'dog proof' room?

my youngest is the greediest, sneakiest little monster at times, if i leave something she shouldnt have, somewhere she manages to get it from, i just except it was my own daft fault for leaving it there, and i make myself remember to not do iut again, this only applies to food though for my one anyway.

good luck.

edited to say:

you should attemp the 'leave it' or 'no' command for when you are with the dogs, if they get good at this you can give them tasks and things to keep their minds busy, im constantly trying to think of new things to teach my two. obviously the 'leave it' command really only helps when your with the dogs and catch them in the act

I should have been back here to say she has settled a little more, new tricks help keep her head busy, removing all chewable things is what i have been doing, only things she has chewed here have been toilet rolls i accept fault for leaving it within grasp or raiding the bin if i forget to remove to the bedroom and close the door. just now she is living with a friend of mine who is considering a dog, it gives me a break and a chance to sort out the puppies at this crucial point in their development. maybe she comes back to me after a while but she is not going back to her previous owner
