Hi - hoping the kind and understanding GAL forum folks can help us.
Haven't posted for a while but for those of you who don't know Misty's background, she's 7 and we're pretty sure she's never been socialised with other dogs. She can be a bit erratic and takes dislikes to some dogs for no reason. She's never made contact but she does lunge. Now we always keep her on a muzzle just in case. She also doesn't understand playing and won't really explore away from us. She does however get on well with the dogs with the dogwalker so we know that she can if she sees dogs regularly. Unfortunately when we're taking her out on her dogwalks, we're not seeing the same dogs on a regular basis so it's been hard to build up any relationships with other dogs. I know we've only had her for 3 months and it's a long road we're travelling but without meeting dogs regularly, it's proving a bit of a challenge.
We're in Clarkston in the South Side of Glasgow and we're wondering if any kind and patient GAL owners would be interested in meeting up with us and Misty for walks around about that area. We know that there are the monthly walks but we're hoping for something a bit more regular. Ideally you would have one dog (Misty seems to feel a bit outnumbered if 2 or more dogs approach) and your dog would be confident enough to ignore Misty snarling or lunging (she'd be on lead until we she was confident enough) and muzzled at all times) but not be too boundy or instantly friendly. I'm not asking for much am I!
We're also going to book in to one of Viv's classes to get her used to other dogs. Viv and one of her assistants talked us through distract and treat to avoid behaviour and ignore if she goes in to bad behaviour. This has worked well but as I said, we don't always see the same dogs or in fact any dogs at all sometimes! So we're not able to put in consistent practice.
Any help you can give would be gratefully received. Also any advice gratefully received. She's a lovely girl and this is her one of her major issues (all seems to stem from fear) so we really want to work as much as we can on this - also we need to practice dealing with it ourselves!
Sorry I'm not closer, she is such a great looking dog I would love to meet up. She may like the salt n pepper hairies I have. I'm sure you'll get some regular walkers to meet up with, but if your out this way, give me a shout.
Mason and I are moving over your way in a couple of months (hopefully) and will be more than happy to meet up. He's pretty laidback and well socialised. Hopefully we'll be able to meet up! Marie
I'm in the west end of Glasgow and would be happy to meet up but I have two and they have their own issues. Indiana goes mad on lead when he sees other dogs in the distance but is getting a lot better now that we have been going out with other dogs. He is fine off lead. They also wear muzzles. PM me if you want to give it a go and we can discuss places and the how. I'm prob going to Mugdock on Mon if weather ok. On Sat, a local guy takes my two out with his two and another dog (just coz he loves dogs!) and sometimes I join him (sometimes I stay in bed...). Usually they do the Kelvin walkway. My dogs have been a lot better since taking part in these walks. The guy is a very good pack leader!
I would've met up with you too had I been closer, and not had two dogs with their own issues. Am going through similar problem here in Fife, so understand. It will be great to meet another owner that understands dogs and just cos one is barking/lunging or whatever, it doesn't make them bad dogs. They are just like people, they like some and not others. Bet my Stumpy could make her play, he play bows with the cat, crows, seaweed, whatever. Party on Stumps
Thanks all for the messages and offers of help - I'll PM those that have offered help. Hope to meet some of you at a GAL walk some time soon - I'll be the one pretending to be calm with a mad dog!
Andy (human), Fiddie, Coco & me live at Queens Park - Pollokshaws Road/ Stratbungo side - it would be great to meet up. However, Fiddie doesn't really like other dogs, but to be fair, after a couple of minutes he does settle down - maybe Misty & Fiddie are rather alike.
We then have the glorious Coco-G - she is such a teenager, acting up, but would very much like to socialise with other dogs, but because Fiddie is crabbit, not always possible.
So, don't know if you wish to come over to Queens Park or we meet you half-way, such as Linn Park - choice is yours!
