Update on Eugene (Gene)
Permalink Closed

It's been almost a month since he arrived and most of that time has been spent getting to know Gene and him us.

He was a very freaky Pete at first, starting at almost every moving thing while outside and watching the house goings on from the safety of his couch.

The cat has taken herself upstairs and makes very little effort to get used to the large black canine enemy. Gene, however, doesn't really seem to care much other than a sniff at the room she occupies or catch the occasional glimpse of her slinking down to sit on the top of the freezer where she can watch him when he drinks or eats. His arrival has made her want to go outside more often though and she might even lose a bit of weight with all the excercise. biggrin

Gene's been great. Getting used to boundaries and commands and routine. He's the perfect alarm clock.. 6-6:30am hmm he gets off his sofa and has a whine at the door...

11-12:00 it's the serious walk. For being such a freaky Pete in the beginning he can now handle Balloch and Lomond Shores even on Farmers Market day and Alexandria... if no one talks to him that is....

Most of the time we either head down the river where he can now get off the lead on the path for recall training as there are few places he can escape too.. or down to the loch where he gets off the lead up by the sandy roads below the castle.. He did make me look like the most incompetent dog owner a few times to start with but has learned recall eventually.. even if it does take some time when he's busy... With all that space to sniff n gallump it's to be expected really..

He's no problem with other dogs and has a wee friend in another black grey called Slim who we've met quite a few times... Slim goes straight to my treat pocket... biggrin Gene has no time for the poor owner of Slim though.. or people generally.. (I know that feeling... aww )

He's roaching on his couch as per the usual right now after a good run about down the loch..

Have'nt uploaded any pics to the computer as yet but will post them as soon as...

Sounds like he's doing really well. I'm very impressed he's off-lead. Took me ages to work up the courage biggrin.gif

wow he has landed on his feet (or should that be sofa).... so good to hear he is doing so well. I still don't have confidence working of the lead with Red. I so need to keep looking for a good field and I know that you know some Karen I just don't know where the time goes. In fact think I will pm you later this week to try and meet up. I am now going this Sunday to the walk and hubby coming too. So will get chance for Red to meet some friends.

Midas.. Do you.. or anyone else know how he got that scar on his right shoulder ? It's quite a size.. He sometimes goes a bit lame on his right fore leg. I took him to the vet and she said his limp may be a residual ache in the damaged shoulder though he seemed fine when she checked him out..

Poor lad has a few old war wounds that are appearing now his winter coat is falling out..

I was brushing him the other night and the carpet around him was covered so I went to get the hoover fully expecting him to shoot off when it started up.. instead he lay down and let me use the brush nozzle to gather up all the stay hairs around his feet and down his bum and tail... smile.gif

No fear of a screaming hoover yet he tries to jump up on the safety of my head when a piece of paper blows by on a walk...

I dunno........ lol

I haven't really seen him before other than pics so seeing the video was brilliant he is amazingly handsome, I hadn't quite realised how big he was, stunning and clearly very happy. Oh and forgot that my Stumpy is scared of squeaky toys so turned round after watching video and he was quivering under his duvet, head hidden bum in the air. Should've turned the sound down... bad Mummy.

I have a real soft spot for the fella - I've met him on a number of occasions. It's fantastic to see him so happy and settled. He's looking great. aww.gifaww.gifaww.gif

He looks so content and happy, I'm just thrilled for himaww.gif Funny about the hoover, Mason's exactly the same and has to be nudged with the nozzle before he'll get up so I can do the carpet underneath him. Strangely my mum bought me an electric carpet sweeper the other week which makes much less noise and is fairly small - he shot out the room when I used it for the first time?!?
Daft dog.

Eugene was much loved and very highly thought of by his owner,Gene sustained a very nasty injury and visited a specialist vet in Ireland, the scar is from the surgery he had to repair the damage it was hoped I think that he would race again I remember being told that he travelled back and forth across the water over a period of nine months, when he could not race again,he was retired and GAL was asked to help re-home him, interestingly enough his ex owner only keeps black dogs and they have the very best of everything and he always makes a very generous donation when having a dog rehomed.

Rachel.
